I might be driving out to California in the spring, I'm wondering if there's any must see stuff or suggestions for the best route to take. I'd love to see Yellowstone, but I'm not sure what else there is if we go out that way and without it taking forever. Originally I'd looked at doing something like MI, IL, MO, KS, CO, UT, AZ, CA... but I'm not sure there's really much to see until Colorado. Alternatively, I imagine there is jack stuff going through Iowa and Nebraska. Could probably fit about a week of driving in total.

Yellowstone and Glacier National Park are somewhere on my road trip to-do list. Maybe RV it with my son and my dad when he gets old enough to appreciate it.

I would definitely make sure Yellowstone is on the list.

I think that's the plan now... gonna try to boot it out to Yellowstone in 2-3 days and then take our time coming down through Utah and Arizona.

Thanks E.J., any help is great. I've never been driving out in any of these states before. Will be heading out likely from around April 23 to May 4th.

Yellowstone is BEAUTIFUL! I went in early fall (September I believe) and it was beautiful. Jackson Hole, WY was absolutely gorgeous with tons of stuff to do.

You could try this for a little nicer scenery.... doable in a week if you don't mind driving 8 hours each day... assuming you are going from Toronto to Los Angeles

That's pretty much the route I was looking at, except we'll probably end up going through the grand canyon, then through flagstaff, ending in Palm Springs.

I would go through south dakota instead of north dakota. You could hit the black hills and Mt Rushmore.

ontrider, I found the perfect route for you. It includes St. Louis, Dodge City, the Grand Canyon, and if you detour just a little bit, the world's biggest ball of twine.

I don't know if it fits, but Denver and 70W out of Denver has plenty to see and do.

Mount Evans and Echo Lake is 100% worth the drive. Went in June for the first time and I will go back.

You can drive down to Colorado Springs and drive Pikes Peak or walk through Garden of the Gods.

See a concert at Red Rocks also (doesn't matter who it is), the best venue I've ever been to.

Off 70W you can hit Breck, Vail, and a lot of different areas that are great in the summer too.

Don't let Christie Brinkley distract you while driving...that could end badly.

I would suggest taking "going to the sun" road in Glacier national park. Easily the most spectacular drive you'll ever do. It typically doesn't open up till at least mid June though.

EJ my bucket list is southern Utah for sure. We take for granted our drive through the Rockies every year, southern Utah would be so much different than what we are used to.

Yellow stone, is ok I guess, Jackson is a bit better, the grand Teton's are worth a look.

Anyone here who is an expert on Yellowstone by chance? After looking at the website, I see a lot of the roads don't open until May 1st... any ideas how much we can actually do or how accessible things are if I hit it around April 23-27? It looks like some of the roads are supposed to be open then to things like mammoth hot springs, but it's hard to tell based on what the actual weather does. First hand knowledge would be great.

Thanks for the Colorado suggestions Brew, will definitely be looking at doing Pikes Peak. Didn't see anything interesting going on at Red Rocks unfortunately, but would still like to check out the venue too.

It would usuallly be a coin flip regarding access in Yellowstone in late April.

This year has been incredibly mild for winter in the west. That said Yellowstone could still get blasted with snow really up until sometime in May. Each week that passes though works in your favor.

Yeah, it's throwing a wrench into my plans of how much time to allocate to Yellowstone.
