Yesterday I tried to take a half day off today so that I could watch today's game. My boss shot that down because he'd scheduled me for a 9am meeting Evil or Very Mad which was off site, at a pub, until noon. And the pub also was airing the Portugal/Ghana game. Cool

Tuesday is a clusterf, though. Already taking thurs/fri off and there's no way to 'half day' this one since the game is at 12:30pt. Kind of bummed. Perhaps I'll try and wait until I get home from work to watch it.

Even with the loss I'm excited for the direction Jurgen has this team headed.

damn it. we could have and should have won. our defense was terrible. That said, Tim Howard was a beast. Jurgen has done well and hope he continues to improve this team.

soccer is a funny game. i don't think a neutral observer would say we should have won. chances created were like 25-5 in favor of belgium. howard stopped wayyy more shots than he should have, but belgium dominated the game. we had 2 or 3 golden opportunities that we should have scored, but how many more did they have?

if anything, i'd say we were fortunate to hold them so long. we could have easily let in 4 like we did in cleveland.

and as far as jurgen improving the team, i don't know whether our 2014 team was an improvement over our 2010 team. certainly they aren't any better overall technically, and if they were, you couldn't give jurgen the credit for that.

in order to see our team make the next jump - from the second tier up to the first tier of teams, our youth development needs to change. it has to start with the kids being better on the ball, and that will lead to our pros being better on the ball. it has to be a bottom up approach, not top down. once we do that, our effort and physical conditioning will be the icing on the cake instead of the foundation of the team.

Shocked Shocked the style of play and overall tactical approach was night and day from 2010. bob bradley was in well over his head.

1-2-0 vs alg-eng/slo in maybe the easiest group vs 1-1-1 vs gha-por-ger in arguably the toughest group is a clear sign of improvement if you ask me. hanging w/ bel (11) through 90 vs gha (32) is another clear sign. if the 2014 team plays in the 2010 tourney, they are through to the quarters vs uru (16) and that's a winnable match.

I should have been more clear. We should have won, but Wondo missed a 6 yard goal and Dempsy missed a bread and butter set play. Now, Dempsy's miss was in part due to the goalie being in a perfect position. Wondo just choked.

As far as deserving, no, Bel whipped our butts. Our defense is terrible.

sucks for neymar, but brazil plays like thugs so there's a bit of karma going on there too. they lead the wc in both fouls (96) and yellows (10).

f neymar. he's a divey little bitch.

i'm more upset that thiago silva will miss the semifinal. it was stupid of him to get that yellow, but the accumulation rules are a bit draconian. if a player gets a yellow in the first match of the group stage, they carry it through the quarter final. that's crazy. if i were king, they would reset after the group stage and again after the quarters.

wow. lose two guys and their team fell apart.

Anyone think Germany only played 20 minutes of their game against us? They seemed to lay off the attack in the first half after 14 or so minutes.

???

Brazil was missing their two best players and it showed. Not sure I'd agree that Germany played soft on the US.

After reading more, I have to agree. Seems like Germany broke Brazil after the second goal.

brazil just cracked once germany got the second. the pressure on them has been incredible all month. it's almost shocking that they held out this long. losing neymar and t. silva just broke their backs.

the pressure is the only explanation i have for how this team played so poorly compared to the same team who cruised through the confed cup last summer. same players. same coach. same stadiums. different pressure.
