Who's pumped? I'm putting together a last minute world cup bracket pool. $5 entry fee. PM your email address if you're interested, and I'll get you the details.
As for the tournament itself, it's going to be as interesting to see what happens off the field as what happens on it. I wanted to go down to Brazil and follow the USMNT around, but it sounds like it's going to be a total CF down there.
On the field, it's hard to pick against Brazil, but who knows what will happen. Lots of pressure, and the home team could crumble. No European team has ever won in South America too.
So, who ya got? |

I'll pick after the first round. I haven't really followed the teams, other than in name. I think the US has an opportunity to play spoiler, but I don't think they have the chops to do it. They just aren't as fluid as the other teams (the few I have seen). Based on name alone - Germany, France, Spain, Brazil... _________________ Work SUX! |

[bart]can't wait![/scott]
got my new jersey getting in tomorrow (duece!), have my ghana game watching bar picked out, have blocked off my calendar for all 1st round usmnt games so no one schedules meetings around them. LOVE me some WC!
i don't see how we make it out of group play. our weakness is back line defense and ronaldo is arguably the best goal scorer in the world. germany outclasses us at every position, especially at midfield w/ ozil and schweinsteiger. there's also no chance of getting any help from ghana. |

jt09, lol at Bart Scott ref!
My dad is a knucklehead. He had an all-expenses paid trip to Sao Paulo for WC. He's had to turn it down because he is too busy with work. *insert PriceIsRightLoserMusicHere* _________________

Far from pumped but I will watch the USA matches if I don't have anything going on when they are on. _________________

I'll be pulling for the USA and Germany. I wish we had more coaches in the US like Klinsman and media that wouldn't spin his motivation tactics (even if they are true).
The series that ESPN has been airing about the US team up to the World Cup has been very good. _________________ RIP DLS.

the games have been great so far. i never expected the dutch to maul spain like that. or CR to beat up on uruguay.
i may take a long lunch to watch germany and portugal as a warm up before we play ghana tonight. it's like christmas for a soccer nerd like me. |

I'm going to take the Dutch. They are a scrappy and good looking team.
Brasil should have lost that match. Momentum was snatched by the ref and a terrible call. England just couldn't get it together.
I will catch some of the German game at lunch. They might be my number one pick after watching the game. _________________ Work SUX! |

3-0 at half so i'm back at the office. i shouldn't be surprised that pepe got himself thrown out, but i am. the only way this could be better is if ronaldo cries at the end. |

dang. Germans look good. by the way, they are showing the game on the Watch ESPN app on a smart phone. You have to be a cable / satalite subscriber. my signal is crappy, but i get to watch some of the game every couple of minutes. _________________ Work SUX! |

We looked terrible. The US play was really, really sloppy. Passes were not on target, giving Ghana the ball back way too easily. There were three or four good runs starting and a pass would be behind the guy making the run down the field. They also need to either pass sooner or fight harder to keep possesion. Ghana seemed to take the ball at will.
That said, the US is a scrappy team and has the fight to win. They never held their heads down and played some amazing defense. Hopefully they make it out of group play. _________________ Work SUX! |

And they pull it out with a strong attack. Good ending, but they played poorly against a lesser team.
Next game should be epic - Brazil v Mexico _________________ Work SUX! |

good news for sunday's match v portugal:
Quote: | Portugal will be without Fabio Coentrão and Hugo Almeida for at least the remainder of the World Cup's group stages. Both players were withdrawn by Paulo Bento in their shock 4-0 defeat to Germany on Monday, and the team doctor Henrique Jones has revealed that both players will be out for "more than 10 days." |
that's on top of pepe's red card. down 3 starters - i'll take it!
edit - their gk may not make the game either. has a thigh tear.

that one touch off the left foot while the ball was in the air was awesome. One hell of a pass and then the goal. that was great to watch. _________________ Work SUX! |

yesterday's matches were great all around. i couldn't believe alex song punch/chopped the croatian in the back like that. he had been cameroon's best player up to that point, and they were still in the game. the wheels fell off from there.
i'm excited to see james rodriquez play over lunch today. he was great in colombia's first game.
and ya, cahill's goal was sick. |

STPHNSN23, just an FYI, it actually is used as a gay slur.
But, like many other words en español, it has more than one translation, and while "derogatory" in nature, some of those other translations are not really profanity. _________________

as someone who worked for years and years in both landscaping and the service industry, pinche puto is absolutely derogatory, but not really anything to do w/ gay or not. mostly translates to "f*ing bitch". |

i know what the word means. i taught teenage mexicans how to ski for 3 summers. my problem is that they decide to "investigate" it now when every mexican game, national team or clubs, for the last billion years has had the puto chant during a goal kick. and fifa or concacaf has never had a problem with it. |
