how are you getting your gear around on planes? types of bags and cost to check?

i have a board bag, but it's unpadded and not particularly deep - barely fits 2 boards w/ bindings. i also have a bigass roller duffel http://www.dogfunk.com/dakine-wheeled-duffle-bag-large-5480cu

i figure most of the time i'll be hauling 2 people's stuff - mine and my daughters. the big duffel is great because it just swallows boots, helmets, whatever.

i know i need a new board bag, likely this one: http://www.burton.com/default/wheelie-gig-bag/F14-10994100.html?cgid=bags-luggage-snowboarding-gear-bags

my question is given airline bag fees, should i stay w/ the bigass roller duffel and board bag (the new one), or pick up some boot backpacks and take boots/helmet as a carry-on. like these: http://www.dakine.com/search?keyword=boot%20pack

I have 2 Burton's you have above and I like them a lot. The burton is large enough to put a board, boots and helmet, however it won't hold 2 boards and all your stuff unless you take the bindings off. When we travel to is a board bag and duffle. Also I always flly southwest for snowboarding so I don't have to worry about the bag fees.

i'll need enough room for 3 decks and 2 sets of bindings. if i can fit boots (2 pair) in there too, that would be money.

What do all the terms on jackets mean (10k, 15k, etc) mean? I know that a shell is not something that I want, but I'm clueless on the other terms. I'd like a jacket/pants combo that'd keep me warm and dry at nearly any temperature.

Ex. Which of these jackets would be a good choice?

I haven't traveled with it in a bit but I have a big ol' burton wheelie bag. I can take off bindings on my bigger board, put the smaller board on top of it and my take off bindings inbetween the smaller board bindings. Boots go on the tip and tail of the top board and soft goods are packed throughout every nook and cranny left.

I can travel with that and a carry-on and I'm generally good.

I have a snowboard bag like the one you posted... I can fit my boots in my carryon (along with a change of clothes, plus snowboard jacket and pants). Everything else I stick in my snowboard duffel.

I have never had my snowboard get lost in transit, but I'm paranoid. I can go a trip with a demo board, but I sure as hell will not use rental boots if I can avoid it.

when was the last time you tried this? and on what airline? some charge for carryons now - you get a backpack or purse as a "personal item" but a roll-on is a carryon that costs $20 or something like that. that's pretty much why i posted the question - i'm trying to find the right combination of bags at the lowest cost.

jt09, not snowboard related - but as a family we now travel with one big ass bag from REI (wheely beast 34). It works awesome - we just have to watch the weight (keep it under 50lbs) - the bag itself weighs about 11lbs - so we only have 39lbs of usable weight.

I would think that should be a high priority: lots of room for board and other crap, but the bag itself should be fairly lightweight if possible.

It might get expensive, but if you save $50 in fees every time you go, it will add up fast.

my dakine bag is fairly light. haven't weighed it, but i have a hard time believing it weighs 10lbs.

edit: according to dakine, it weighs 9.2lbs. huh. never would have thought that.

Yeah wasn't on Frontier or Spirit so no baggage fees for carry-on. Most of my travel is United or Southwest.

my last 3 legs have been on frontier because it's so damn cheap. but it's also so damn cheap because nothing is included. i need to navigate that better next year.

united did get me for like $60 ($40?) on the way to colorado too though. had the bigass roller duffel and the board bag.

look at real water sports in hatteras or any other online shop that sells kiteboard bags. they are usually labelled golf bag. My back says slingshot golf on the side of it.

airlines typically don't charge extra for golf bags but they bend you over for snowboard/surfboard gear. if they ask what's in the bag you just say it's your golf bag... sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

Also I've never seen an airline charge anything other than normal baggage fees for snowboards.

you put a 162cm board in a 146cm bag? http://www.slingshotsports.com/kite/products/bags/2013-golf-bag-sku-139996

My bag is similar but it fits up to 165cm. Its probably 4 years old though?

I have seen a bunch of different bags while traveling on kite trips. Most kiteboard bags will say golf bag though. I would think you should be able to find one that would fit a snowboard.

Too bad the slingshot isnt as big anymore. Thats a great one. Has rollers, lots of different areas to store stuff. The biggest issue with the bag cause it can store so much is the weight limit of 50 lbs.

For many airlines you can combine a ski/snowboard bag with a boot bag as one checked bag at normal rate. They still try to charge you extra sometimes, but a printout from their website takes care of it.

yeah that will do it.
AA actually made me open the boot bag one time to check if it was boots, and I just have a large backpack boot bag.

pro tip - don't check your boot bag and act like your going to carry it on, but have it checked for free at the gate because it wont "fit in the box"
