|
|
My wife always wanted to catch a sailfish so she booked us a trip to Key West last week so she could have a shot at one. I told her you cannot actually pick what you catch you troll and hopefully something will bite but every fish that does bite will be a lot of fun. We flew down last Wed. and Thursday the winds were 20-22 we postponed with the guide to try again Friday. Friday morning the winds were 18-20 and they tried to take us anyway or go catch sharks at the reef we declined both and we had a flight to leave at 1:50 on Saturday afternoon they also let us know that it is a little early in the season and nobody and the billfish have not made it down yet. My wife suggested we go Saturday morning at 7 and only make a half day charter so we could still catch our plane, game on. We went out about 6 miles and trolled past the Vandenburg wreck and each caught a barracuda. At this point I am happy I caught a fish in Florida and anything after this is just gravy. We keep trolling the first mate yells out "fish on and it is a sail" he hands the pole to me even though it was my turn I told him hand it to my wife. That was honestly one of the hardest things I have ever done. Then the fight was on I went and grabbed my phone and gopro and started filming and taking pics. After about a 15 minute fight we get him in snap a few photos then put him in the water and revived him and sent him along his way. We made our way back to the dock flying the flag high and proud. The first mate told us that nobody has caught one on the whole dock in 2 weeks we got extremely lucky.

Way to go! First sailfish is a great thrill.
I would like to comment however that if any of you guys are coming to soflo and/or the keys I'd be happy to point you in the right direction when it comes to fishing or any other information I can provide. IJS, Barracuda is a junk fish here and it is actually sailfish season now. Any charter guy can put you on a cuda anytime and catching a sailfish is awesome, but it's not lucky this time of year.
Anyways, congrats man!

Congrats to her!
FWIW, I told vette he should check with you, PartyB - or on the Florida Sportsman forums when he asked me about a charter. I also told him watch out for the hard sell of the mount, which his capt and mate promptly gave after releasing the fish. Fortunately, he turned them down and can get a mount here without paying shipping (and the cut to the boat) if (s)he so desires.

Good God that tuna is a BIG fish.... Not to be the materialistic one, but does he get a percentage of what they sell that for?

Yes, the FS forums are great...you can post a thread seeking a charter in the georgraphic region you are visiting and see what good charters there are. Naturally a search works very well too.
They will def try and get ya' for a mount, they make a good percentage.
You can also get "used" mounts on CL and ebay often times, if you are into that sorta thing.

The guy that I lease my office space from use to be a charter boat captain and he said that the down payment goes strait to the crew in this case it would of been $510 out of $1300ish.

I think this is a fish story... the world record for a yellow fin is around 445 lb. I caught a couple that were around 79"; 200-220 lbs. (guesstimate). This looks to be in that ball park.

It's hard to tell, but from the looks of the pectoral fins that looks like a bluefin.

You may be right, but it still looks much smaller unless everything in that boat is huge.

This, and the anal fin is much too small for YFT; I'm going with BFT also, probably is a big cockpit.

It's a damn shame to see yet another bluefin being taken out of the water.

Who is setting the regs and who is influencing them?

Ummmm...it's not these NE guys catching fish on rod & reel that are the issue, at all.

Dumbasses like Chad H. apparently. Sport fishing is a drop in the bucket, but fish and game departments keep cutting sport fishing allowables while commercial fishing takes 99% of the fish.

ohsix, Partyb, jryoung,
I agree rod and reel fisherman aren't the issue, but I'm pretty against keeping anything in any realm of fishing/hunting that appears on the IUCN Endangered list.
