Should Lerner's 5th Amendment right be protected or overridden?

Seems to me that if they force her to testify and incriminate herself, they are setting a precedent that could affect all citizens. Is there anything on the legal side that makes her situation different that wouldn't apply to an average citizen?

Quote:
Republicans are inching toward a vote to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress after fireworks erupted at a House hearing on the tea party targeting on Wednesday.

Lerner, former head of the IRS tax-exempt unit and a lightning rod for Republicans in the nine-month-old scandal, invoked her Fifth Amendment right to refuse to answer self-incriminating questions at a House Oversight and Government Reform hearing — as she did at a May hearing last year.

My thoughts

1.) Targeting occurred.(should piss everyone off royal, very scary)

2.) Barack did not explicitly order the targeting.(were does responsibility of the man at the top stop?)

3.) You can be held in contempt for refusal to testify, under certain circumstances.( I stayed at a Holiday Inn)

4.) This specific hearing was a S-show.(Partisan bickering rules the day)

Seems like a lot of people don't see this and the long term implications. They appear to be too busy being Issa's cheerleader.

To stay consistent with your political philosophy do you think anyone's rights should be overridden?

If you support the 1st-10th and next 27, with the exception of the 18th, handled in the 21st (my favorite), why would you pose the questions that someone's 5th be overridden?

Plus these Congressional Hearings are just political grandstanding to help with the midterm elections.

How are you saying those amendments are overriding people's rights?

chavez, if you know what the reasoning of the question is, feel free to speak up and enlighten me. Seems more effective in a conversation than arrogant image posting. You should know me well enough by now that I don't want to assume what the intent of the question or point is and when I'm not sure, I ask.

How dense are you or do you even read your posts? She has the right to invoke the 5th amendment and you're the biggest Constitution backer on here so you should support that. Her right to invoke the 5th amendment is not superseded by your right as a tea party Republican to string her up.

I agree that she has the right to invoke the 5th and it bothers me they seem to think she cant do that. That is my concern and that was my point. I think the Republicans, tea party or otherwise, are a huge threat, especially in this instance.

This statement gave the impression that you think she should have to testify and answer for the targeting claim.

Lois thinks conservatives are A-holes and Crazies.

Barry O: "Not one smidgen of evidence that the IRS targeted conservative groups"
