Jamal: Don’t really understand all of it, coach, but it sounds pretty good for me and my bros.
Coach: Well, here’s a little something from the university. [hands Jamal an envelope]
Jamal: [opens envelope and pulls out a government-looking form; suspicious look creeping over his face] What’s this?
Coach: It’s a 1099, Jamal.
Jamal: A ten-what?
Coach: IRS form 1099, son. As a union member that means you’re an employee which means the cost of your scholly plus room and board, food and travel is taxable to you. The IRS has determined your imputed annual income from these costs to be $75,000. That form tells you you owe about $24,000 in federal and state taxes due next month.
"We can only get away with whatever's considered reasonable by the majority of the folks in our society. That's why it's different in the SEC. Maybe that's why we're able to be more active in what we do. Because no one ever looks at the car or the jewelry and says, 'How did you get that, poor football player?' They say, 'How did they get you that and not get caught, poor football player?'"
I know one of our guys once stopped putting in big bucks, way more than what I do, just because a head coach cussed too much on the team plane. [The coach] was losing anyway, but because he took the Lord's name in vain, that guy was offended by his morality and stopped illegally paying college football players."

The University of Utah football team out at a local park running hills this morning….
On the left is the starting SS…listed at 6’2 215….on the right, the starting QB, 6’7” 240…
QB had some type of brain issue that put his life/future in football in jeopardy at the end of last year... Total body transformation, while sitting out, waiting to see if he could continue to play. He's been cleared for contact(went through spring no contact, which how often do starting QB's face contact in Spring anyway).
Just over a month until the 2014 season kicks off!
my bobcats have 3 players on preseason award watch lists - something that's never happened before.
edit for full list:
Mike Orakpo- Butkus Award Watch List
David Mayo- Lombardi Award watch List
Robert Lowe- Doak Walker Award Candidate
Brandon Smith- CFPA Kickoff Returner Watch List
Jafus Gaines- CFPA Kickoff Returner Watch List
Brad Miller- CFPA Tight End Watch List
Jason Dann- CFPA Placekicker Watch List

anyone been to a game at michigan stadium? hoosiers play there nov. 1, and i'm thinking about making the trip. i've never been to ann arbor.
The Big House is reportedly awesome. Also hear good things about Ann Arbor. Some friends of mine went last time Utah played there and are going back again this year. Also reported back that the fans are great as well, welcoming.
Hau'oli Kikaha, Danny Shelton, Shaq Thompson and Marcus Peters have been peppering the pre-season lists. All could easily see AA honors at the end of the year.
There's a lot of talent on this team, and I'm anxious to see what Coach Pete can do with it. _________________

it's cool to go to such a historic place that you've seen on tv so much, but it's underwhelming in person. i know they've renovated since i've been, but they didn't make the run (as in rise/run for each row of seats) any bigger and i doubt they made the seat allotment any wider, so you're all packed in pretty tight and if one person decides to go piss, you're all getting up to let them pass. all that said, still go for sure - it's the big house fercrissakes!
jt09, that's what i've heard and read. the place is massive and historic, but the size makes the atmosphere a bit sterile. i think i'm going to see if i can get a group together to make the trip.
i'm going to try to get to all the B1G stadiums. i wonder how many people can say they have seen IU lose at every stadium in the conference...
Another thing that struck me about the big house is that it is built into the ground a bit so it doesn't give an awe inspiring profile from exterior. _________________ Is President Obama a Keynesian?
those are the 2 things make it less impressive in person than on tv - built into the ground so it's not monolithic at all, and then the single bowl is so sloped that you're REALLY far from the field if you're anywhere over halfway up.
still, it's one of those places you should go. great tailgating at the golf course across the street.
Agreed, awesome experience. All the Big Ten stadiums I have experienced have had cool tailgate scenes with respectful/ welcoming fans.( mich, msu, wisc, minn, Iowa) _________________ Is President Obama a Keynesian?
i case you haven't heard, charlie strong ain't f*ing around w/ the assclowns that helped texas suck so hard the last couple of years. housecleaning in austin right now.
2 players suspended indefinitely after being arrested on rape charges. suspension is a legal technicality - they are gone.
5 more dismissed in the last 24 hours and rumors of more to come. prevailing thought is that they failed a 2nd drug test this week.
wr kendall sanders* (rape)
wr montrel meander (rape)
rb joe bergeron*
db chevoski collins
rb jalen overstreet
s josh turner*
lb kendall thompson
* = starter/significant pt
edit - that's on top of 2 others that got the boot during the spring: s leroy scott* and lb chet moss
edit2: looks like kendall thompson is done w/ football due to concussions. just piss poor timing w/ everyone else getting cut for being a dumby wumby.

sanders hurts because he's explosive, and just getting started - dude had the potential to be a bigtime cfb player. bergeron hurts because he's quality depth behind 2 guys coming off injuries. scott and turner would have been battling for the 2nd s spot/in s rotation, so that's a big one as well. most of those can be worked around, other than the safety position - there are some really athletic guys there, but nowhere close to proven ready to play big time ball.
I'm all for it. Coach Strong gave them 6 months to get their acts together. I guess they didn't believe him. No one around there is bigger than the team. The culture has been terrible since we lost to Bama. Mack was absent and let the team run wild. I'm liking the cuts.
BUT - are the cuts official (outside of the rapists)?? This is all being reported by OB. The University still hasn't come out and said they are done and the players can appeal. Also, the players are meeting with Strong today. I wouldn't be surprised if they are all back or at least Joe. _________________ Work SUX!
If this somehow changes the outcome of the hopeful beat down of the BYU Cougars on Sept. 6th....I am going to flip my lid.
Utah QB Travis Wilson sited for possession of alcohol(by consumption) at a concert over the weekend....big news here.... WOW, 20 y/o college student had a few beers at a concert. Not even a public intox...
i think it definitely affects outcomes, especially since there are indications that more cuts could be coming. rumor that qb swoopes could be next (other than depth, which is sorely needed, not a big loss - he kinda sucks).
