Well, it's time to start getting things ready for the garden. I did some prep work on the garden boxes Sunday afternoon. The soil has been mixed with some of the compost and it's getting all settled. I'm starting to plan the layout and see what I want to grow. I'm going to add a whiskey barrel and probably do more horseradish and maybe some strawberries. I'm also planning to put the squash in it's own area so it doesn't crowd the boxes.

It's getting close to time to plant the cool weather items. I may wait until a little on the later side this year to avoid freezes. I got tired over covering and uncovering the garden last year, and this year seems to be colder. So far, this is the plan for the layout, although still fine tuning a bit. I'm getting the squash out of the smaller bozes and giving them their own space. I also want to grow more horseradish this year so I am going to do a whiskey barrel for them over by the potatoes.

With the lack of winter here in CA we've had great success with our winter garden.

Enclosure is solid, on the planters I ran the 1/2" PVC and layed 6 mil visqueen over the top to protect the plants. With all the sun we've had everything wen't gangbusters so we've pulled the cover off now.

More preparation and some planting is already underway. The potatoes are planted, and also have the horseradish in the ground. Onions and garlic are looking good, having been planted in the fall.
I built two new boxes for the melons, rather than just a dirt pile for them to grow in. I also built a new box for the squash, so they could be away from the more compressed garden space. I needed to finish filling the new boxes and wanted to top off the rest. Rather than getting some bulk garden soil or compost, I bought bagged soil/soil amendment to mix together.
All the boxes are full and ready to go. I'm hoping to plant the cool season items this weekend if the weather cooperates.

Okie Boarder, just out of curiosity - do you guys have a "dump" nearby that recycles green waste into compost/mulch?
I recently found out that our "dump" has compost/mulch for sale. My landscape crew (they swear by the stuff) brought in 4 truckloads (like light duty truck bed fulls) of it and used it as the base for our new sod.
My lawn looks like Dodger freaking stadium compared to everyone else right now.

Not at the moment. There is a facility like that down in Norman. When we first started the garden, we got soil from a local horse farm that was composted manure and green waste they did.
A good, natural soil like that is amazing and it definitely makes a difference.

E.J., thanks.
wakeboarderdave1, at this point is is a mixture of many things. The first year I got a horse manure compost. Then I added the "Garden Ready" mix from this supplier. http://www.minickmaterials.com/price-list/ The additional soil for this year is the mixture you see in the pictures (compost/manure, peat moss, top soil). I've done my own composting and added that into the various boxes, as well.

Here are some updated pics...things are coming along nicely and it will be time to plant warm season veggies soon.
This first pic is rather interesting. I had grown horseradish last year, starting in a pot, then in the potato box, then in just a couple feet of extra dirt near one of my compost boxes. I removed all the dirt and even cleared the ground a bit and now have some rogue horseradish growing in that spot. LOL
Strawberries and horseradish in the new whiskey barrel.
Seeds have sprouted and seedlings are growing nicely.
I thought I might throw these in here, as well. We decided to add some bulbs to our front planters to help fill in a bit more. They seem to have filled in nicely and should continue to fill in even more over the years.

That's a great link! Thanks. I do have a couple companion planting links, but I'm still learning and finding out what works.

Got the warm season veggies planted and finalized my layout as far as herbs and flowers as companion plants. Everything is growing good.

Things are growing nicely. We got a burst of hot weather very early this year, so some of the cool season veggies are thinking they're supposed to be done. The broccoli decided to start bolting and I've had a couple of the spinach do the same. Other than that, everything is doing good. Turnips are close to harvest time and I've already trimmed some of the leaves for turnip greens. Here are the latest pictures:

I've had more ant this year than last, but just the little black ants. What have you been doing to try to get rid of them?

we just found them, so we haven't attacked yet. My wife is looking into it. This is more her project than mine. I'm here for support and manual labor.

Coffee grounds can work well. Also, powdered sugar and baking soda mixed together is supposed to work.

Everything is growing well. Harvested more turnips, as well and lettuce and spinach. The spinach is done and was starting to bolt. It looks like the broccoli is about done, too. I'm thinking about letting the final florets actually just go to seed before I pull them and see what happens.

Looking good DLady!
I've discovered a couple new bugs in our garden and around the yard this year. I started finding harlequin bugs on the broccoli and been finding assassin bugs all over. Looks like the harlequin bugs are going to be a fight, since they are very similar to squash bugs.

Things are coming along great. The potatoes are getting close to being done, as well as the garlic. It looks like we'll have a harvest of green beans in the next couple days, and the maters are growing like crazy. The carrots should be ready to harvest pretty soon, also.

The garden is coming along nicely. We have harvested the carrots and turnips, getting good harvests of both. We're getting strawberries and cherry tomatoes here and there. So far we have harvested almost 2 gallon sized bags of green beans. We picked our first pickling cucumber the other day, and the rest of the tomatoes are growing well. The squash seems to be growing slowly and I noticed that box seems to stay fairly wet. All in all, we're coming along nicely.

Start small. It is not easy. I have 11 plants right now. 2 tomato, 2 yellow bell pepper, 2 orange bell pepper, one okra and 5 jalapeno pepper plants. I have a 8X4 raised box - just like above. I have harvested 9 okra, 1 bell pepper and 1 tomato. i hate birds.

Agreed...start small. The first year I had two boxes for most of my veggies and one for potatoes. I've grown from there and gotten to the point where I pretty much know what I want to keep trying to grow...for now.
Once we get into a different house with more space, I'll probably do a combination of boxes and traditional in ground gardening.
Neognosis, what veggies do you eat the most of?

I based my growing on $$$. Orange and Yellow bell peppers are $2 - $3 EACH at the store. I have 7 on one plant right now. That's $21 that I will save.

I wonder what you spent in time, water, fertilizer, and labor.
Okie, that's the problem. I detest vegetables. Absolutely hate them. All of them.
Except raw spinach. And a few years ago, I grew a ton of spinach in my back yard. I started eating spinach with nearly every meal, until I gave myself a kidney stone and the doctor told me that eating spinach with every meal is very bad and likely the cause of my stone. So....
I do eat potatoes though, and sometimes I can stand some raw broccoli. My wife eats all veggies, though....
