TX BBQ Spots

I have a friend that will be traveling to TX frequently over the next six months and I would like to steer her to some good BBQ joints. She will be in Spring, TX and near the Dallas area. What are some spots to recommend?

Hard 8 in stephenville is the best ive had. Not sure where in the dallas area you were referring to but its about 50 miles south of fort worth

For people not from Texas/used to BBQ, just find the closest places that are on Texas Monthly's list of best bbq spots. For someone who's hardcore into BBQ, the best stuff is further south in either central Texas (I prefer the stuff in Lockhart, but Austin has some good choices).

the 2 best in dallas right now are on that list - pecan lodge and lockhart smokehouse. there's nothing in houston worth a damn.

Best Q in houston isn't in Houston. and by best, i mean not bad. Swinging Door in Richmond and Dozer's in Fulsher are good.

There was a Hard 8 in Brady that sucked. It closed about a year ago.

This past summer, I had a day trip to Austin, so I drove over to Lockhart to try Black's which is supposedly one of the best places. I don't know if I caught them on a bad day, or if it's not very good every day, but I was disappointed. I would suggest trying one of the other good Q places if you find yourself in Lockhart.

I have heard good things about the Pecan lodge in the Dallas area.

ohsix, I honestly don't know anyone that's ever eaten at Blacks, if anyone I know is making the trip to Lockhart, they are going to Kreuz's or Smitty's

wakeboarderdave1, You can get okay stuff in Houston, it's just not the best. I've been working away from Texas for 3 years, and I was near a Rudy's last time I was in Houston and was craving some BBQ. I know it doesn't compare to the good places in CenTex, but goddamn did it hit the spot. We don't get good brisket in Southern California

Blacks is hit or miss.. I agree with JT. I have been to Black half a dozen times and sometimes the brisket is good and the ribs are not. Then the ribs are good and the brisket is not. And then I will get both great brisket and ribs.

There is a place at the south end of Lockhart called Chisholm trail that I want to try.

Rudy's is a good go to for some decent stuff. it's not the best, but it will do in a pinch. Their smoked turkey is pretty damn good.

rudy's brisket is as good and consistent as you can ask for a chain. can't say i've ever been disappointed w/ the moist cut.
