Random Question,

Is anyone involved in importing goods from China/India etc.

How much is shipping on a 40 ft container? Is it calculated by weight or volume generally.

What are approximate land shipping rates for said containers (per km).

Ball park figures...

Containers are often a flat fee, what you need to account for is the customs and local transport. If you don't want to pay for a full container you can go LTL which is by volume, shared container for multiple items. But if the container gets flagged due to someone else's paperwork or contents you share in the storage and inspection fee.

Also, keep in mind that if its machinery or metal of any kind its going to need to be hermetically sealed. So if you are able to go below deck on a flight it can often be cheaper the packaging and sea freight.

Here you go (for sporting goods):

40ft from Hong Kong to Long Beach - $1700
20ft from Hong Kong to Long Beach - $1400

Extra fees: usually around $500

Every year you have to pay the US Customs bond around $500

These are all approximate costs.

Airfreight is rarely cheaper if you're doing things right. As noted, full containers are generally a flat fee. If you go through a freight forwarder/consolidator (which you will probably have to) they will charge you based on volume for a less than container load for Ocean or "chargeable weight" by kilos for air which takes volume and weight into account. Are you looking for ground rates in Asia or North America or both?

If you own a business and you will have ongoing shipping needs, pm me. I work for a large logistics company.
