A couple weeks ago my brother sends a text asking if I want to chip in on getting a laptop for our mom. I say ok. Thinking at most it will be a $500 laptop. All she uses it for is emails.

Today I get a text from my brother that the total cost is $1100, and whatever I can chip in would be great. I respond "wtf?!?!?, no way, return that thing and save us both $700". He reponds "just give me whatever you want, I don't want to hear you complain". I respond "return that thing and save us both $700". He responds "don't be cheap".

This goes back and forth a while. I'm going to sleep on it but I'm considering telling him he's on his own with his gift and I'm going to get something else in the maximum $200 range. $1100 for an emailing laptop is outrageous.

Assuming he is already aware that you were thinking $500 and why you think that is more than reasonable for an email machine, give him 2 options -
1 - $300(towards the laptop he bought or the one he buys after he returns the current one)

2 - You get her separate gifts.

Wtf? Just offer what you want to pitch in. If you can't afford more don't offer. How about being thankful that you have a sibling who cares about your mom and wants her to have something nice.

If a price wasn't agreed on ahead of time I'd say you should pay half.

...and letting someone basically spend money for you isn't? You must be rich or something because if my brother asked me to do this the FIRST thing out of my mouth would be "I got $___ to spend, what are you thinking?"

Pay the dude like you said you would. Don't weasel out because you don't like the decision that you let him make.

As mentioned previously:

1. Give him what you were planning to spend on the laptop.

2. Give your own, separate gift.

1) you screwed up by not stating your expectations up front.

2) send him the $250 (or whatever) and say "dude, you are crazy for paying that much." it's not your fault he's an idiot.

Faust, not that it matters, but what did he buy?

If all she needs is email and light browsing, 500 is even a high threshold. Just get an iPad for that.

And I agree 100% with JT's comments above.

Lenova Yoga Pro 2

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/yoga/yoga-2-pro/

I guess she specifically asked for this. She wants something with a keyboard.

After sleeping on it I am going to pay him half price no matter what. Just went through a bit of sticker-shock. Except for gaming machines, I honestly didn't even think laptops sold for over ~$800. Showing my ignorance when it comes to technology.

Now the idea is to persuade them both that there are alternatives out there that make much more sense....

Agree with the other comments.

Should have been planned better. I can understand why your brother is upset with you too - he put in the work to research and buy, you did jack stuff!

My wife's family just did the same thing but in the right order: One of the brothers sent out an email, asking everyone if they were OK with getting a TV for the old man. Everyone said yes and told him how much they were willing to chip in. He went out, did the research and bought a TV that fit in the budget.

No complaints from me - easiest Christmas present I had to get!

Faust, the MacBook Pro I am typing this on was $2200. My last MacBook Air was $1200. Neither are gaming machines.

The Yoga is a nice enough laptop. Complete overkill for someone who is only really writing email and browsing occasionally. She'd really be fine with something more basic, or just a tablet with a keyboard case, but some people just do not understand that. Hell, she'd probably be better than fine, she'd probably be happier with the device, but I digress.
