So I have some friends who bought a teak patio set for their house. I really liked it, so I started looking. Apparently, if you want real teak, and not some eukalyptis (sp?) stuff, it can get pretty expensive. Well, I ran across a guy in Atlanta who refinishes and repairs vintage sets. I picked up this monster two leaf table and 8 chairs last night for $1700. I was absolutely thrilled, as it was about 1/4 what I was quoted for a comparable set from a local patio shop.
Anywho, anyone have any experience with teak patio stuff? How often do I need to oil this stuff?

Yeah teak weathers very well on it's own, and it's super oily. The dust that comes out of the sander you can ball up like a snowball. We build outdoor cabinets out of teak but we finish ours with spar varnish and expect them to be under a covered porch at least. If it were outside like that I would probably leave it unfinished, but it will turn grey quickly it's just something you have to expect.
If it's already oiled which it look like, and you want to keep that color you're gonna have to keep coating it with something like a deck stain each year or so. Between the sun and rain no finish lasts very long outside nor the color.

They are gorgeous and all. I would never take on that maintenace however. Even oiling it once per year (which I'm telling you means it will look like it needs oil for 6 months) is too much for this fella.
But then again, I would pave my yard and paint it green if I could.

We've had teka patio furninture for many years.... Used to keep sanding it and re-oiling it, but since we gave up I actually prefer the weathered look. It's gone silver and looks great. Also doesn't stain peoples pants anymore
The only maintenance it gets is to be hit with the pressure washer once in a while to keep it clean and uniform in colour
