I have a small boat with an 1984 70 HP Johnson motor. The motor fires up great and revs up when in neutral. When I put it into gear, the motor putters out and dies, then after that the motor will not turn over when I turn the key (complete silence)
This might seem wierd but I had a boat that did the exact same thing. It turned out to be the distributer cap because the little pin connector that sits inside had fell. That made all the difference in mine. Good luck.
If by "complete silence" you mean not even the click of the starter solenoid then you are probably forgetting to bring the shifter back to neutral. However, this does address the sputtering/dying issue.
