Surf gate? That's a compelling reason for me to upgrade my boat. |

How does the surf gate stack up to the Nautique NSS system? I have never ridden either but heard a lot of rumors. Has anyone had any first hand experience with both? |

Sorry Suprahunter, I'm only familiar with surfgate, but I can say that it is an excellent alternative to the old way of weighting the boat to get a surf wake. |

?????? Alternative to the Old way of weighting the boat ? Did you just say that? Hahaha. Let me know how awesome it is with zero ballast _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash... |

You still have to weigh it for a good surf wake, but you can weigh it evenly rather than to one side. _________________ 1988 Supra Sunsport

Bambamski, as jtryon already mentioned, it's an alternative to the old way of piling all your weight into one corner of the boat. You simply fill the ballasts, and deploy surfgate on the side that you would like the surf wave to be on. It actually works VERY well, especially if you have both goofy and regular surfers as you aren't constantly emptying and filling ballasts to weight a particular side. |

jjaszkow, jtryon,
Is that what the sales guy told you? Maybe after Joe finishes pulling the kids around on the tube for the afternoon he'll fill ballast and use the surfgate on either side of the boat.
Someone that actually surfs and wakeboards is going to empty one side of the boat to get the optimum surf wake. Sure you can just fill the ballast on both sides and surf.
I can't speak specifically about the Axis cause well, I've never seen an Axis on the water in our parts. But the Bu we were on a couple of weeks ago we emptied the ballast on the one side and the surf wake was signifcantly better. Yes we could have surfed with both sides filled but why would you when it's still better with the boat weighted in a traditional way. It's a good sales pitch though... _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash... |

Bambamski, I am basing my perspective on the actual wave behind a SG equipped VLX. Frankly, I was skeptical as well, but it put out a really nice wave, better than what my Axis A22 puts out with just ballast in one corner (granted the swim platform on my boat messes up my surf wave).
Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to play around with the VLX too much, so I wasn't able to perform the same experiment that you did. When you weighted the one side, did you deploy the SurfGate as well? You have me curious now since it deploys on the opposite side from where the wave is whether it would have any effect at all when the boat is weighted the "traditional" way.
From my perspective, it really means more time on the water and less time filling or emptying ballasts. I ride goofy and most everyone else on the crew is regular. Flipping a switch is a bit faster than waiting for the ballasts. |

I run a 23 LSV with surfgate and have tried pretty much every weight option possible and the traditional way and it is not even close to the wave we get with surfgate and all ballast full. I will say it likes a little more weight on the surf side (a person or two works or just drain the opposite rear tank a little) , but even evenly distributed it is better than traditional. It took a while to dial in the weight to optimize it as it is different than a traditional set up, and with plug and play gets rear heavy (i added weight to the bow to lengthen it) but once dialed in its great and even "stock" is above average. I will say the traditional shape looks great but the length and push of the wave is not even close to the wave with the gate when on it. I haven't tried it on an axis, but after having 2 A22's and really enjoying them I look forward to trying it as I moved up to the LSV specifically for surf gate. |
