|
|
I'm looking at getting in to guns a bit and I don't know where to begin. I've been reading up a bit on general gun safety/types and all of that but I figured you guys could offer some advice on what brands to look at (if that's even important?), or maybe a couple specific models that you've had or have that you liked in general?
I've been shooting here and there since I was young (maybe every 2-3 years) but have never owned one myself yet. All I know is that I'd probably like to eventually end up with a rifle and a handgun but that's about all I've decided so far.
I'd mostly be target shooting with both and have the handgun for home defense. Don't really plan to hunt at all. Probably won't bother with a concealed carry permit, don't really see the need for one.
Also, what do you guys use for security? Safes, trigger locks, etc? What works and what doesn't? That's going to be part of the initial investment for me so something to think about.

I would start out with a .22 rifle. Get a ruger 10/22 or a marlin 795. They are cheap to buy are very reliable and are very cheap to shoot and very fun.

GnarShredd, try and shoot as many different pistols as you can. You will soon find out which one mates with your hand.
You want to do a lot of shooting, and you really want a pistol that pairs both fun and cheap along with self defense; look at anything 9mm. The rounds are cheapers than 40 cal.
I have all kinds, and love how they each shoot. For me personaly, I carry a H&K P30s most of the time (it is a 40 cal). I also like the Kimber Ultra Carry II (1911, 45 cal).
It really depends on how it feels to you, because in the end, they all shoot the same caliber in each model.
Rifles... Now here is where a lot of variables comes into play. Sure, buy a 22 and go give it hell, because it's cheap a lot of fun.
Going hunting? Better buy something more along the lines of a 30-30 on up to a 338! Depends on what your hunting or how far you want to shoot.
Sure, they all can shoot a hell of a long ways, but all that depends on how much drop / drift / humity / bullet weight / ftlbs, ect... So sure, your 30-30 can shoot a 1,000 yards, but you'll have to aim at the moon and it may not be carring enough energy to get there.
Trying to get into long range shooting? You'll need to mate a good heavy barrel gun with an expense scope... none of which will be less than 1500 bucks combined.
In the end, for me, it is all based on how it looks. If I think it looks great, I'll buy it. Regardless of what other have to say... unless it has mechanical issue.

And to add:
Also, what do you guys use for security?
Safe... nothing less
Safe guards against theft and accidents. And by accidents, I mean for example when your friends come over and everyone may end up having to much to drink and find your weapon. Or if kids find it.
I don't use trigger locks, because then you have to look for the key if you need to defend yourself, and this is were you have a small lock box next to bed. Well, not a 'lock box', since you will need a key, but a finger scan box. You can keep it lock & loaded.
Something like this....
http://www.accurateshooter.net/Blog/microvault01.jpg
Sure, it can be stole, but it keeps other people in the house from getting their hands on your gun.
There are other types like this... just found this for example.
I like big safes, not only for my guns, but to keep other items safe from fire / theft. Such as SS card, check books, passport, financial docs, a huge assortment of ammo, ect... Plus if they are bulky, theft becomes harder because it can't be moved by a single person. You can get smaller ones and bolt them to floor which is fine.
I'm not big on key lock single gun storage

BrianABE, Solid info. thanks! I had read a bit about trigger locks and their debatable uselessness, was definitely going to go with at least a safe.
vette74, I like the look of the rugers, thanks for the ideas.

target shooting?
Any idea what distances you will be shooting? Do you have a range picked out or have property that you will be using? My 2c is ....
.22 is good if you plan on shooting 50-100 yds (and have an indoor option for any windy days) Price per round for match grade $0.10
.223 is good if you plan on shooting 100-600 yds Price per round for match grade $0.80
.30anything (7mm) if you plan on shooting 600-1k yds. Price per round for match grade $1.50+
Remember that good optics (which you will need probably beyond 300 yds) will cost you about as much as the gun.

7mm is .284 not .308....and the .264 (6.5) shooters would disagree with you regarding range.
Get a ruger 10/22, cheap, easy to shoot, easy to customize. If you are shooting a lot, you can get a bull barrel (.920 diameter) for $100-400, and a stock to match for $50 - 400. You can shoot more, with better accuracy and all customizations are basically drop in, no gunsmithing needed. Still having fun, get a custom trigger group assembly for $175.
Bottom line, they are one of the best ways to get into shooting and you can take your $250 gun and turn it into an excellent shooter.
If you want to shoot at a longer range and bolt action rifles interest you, the sky is the limit. You can get a good rifle new for about $400 and can spend as much as you want.
My only suggestion here would be to shoot something that is affordable to shoot. Two of the most common cases produced are those of the .308 Winchester and the 30-06. These cartridges are the foundation to dozens of cartridges. What that means is the case is the same, it's just the neck (or bullet diameter) has been changed to fit a different bullet.
The .308 winchester is the case for the .243 winchester, .260 Remington, 7mm-08, .338 federal. and .358 winchester. The 30-06 is the parent case to the 25-06, .270 winchester, 280 remington, 338-06. Because of this most of these cartridges are readily available and inexpensive.
We can go into the ballistic gack of each, but that can be three days worth of conversation.
If you do want to know more about bolt action rifles though, let me know, I could talk for hours.

This is similar to the "whats the best wakeboard?" question.
I think a really good thing to do is to find the big fancy range near you that also has a gun sales shop. They generally have rentals so you can try everything. It will be a somewhat pricy outing since you have to buy ammo from them, but you will get to fondle alot of options.
Or, go to the range and be that friendly guy and talk yourself into shooting others guns.
As far as what to buy, all the old cliches are true. Get something YOU can shoot and shoot well. Something that feels good in YOUR hands. Dont get to mixed up in the "bigger is better" mindset that alot of new shooters get into. A .45 is useless if you cant hit anything with it.
My "outside the box" advice on what to get, is to get something you will enjoy having\shooting. A casual shooting gun you go enjoy once a year isnt worth dropping coin on. Get something that interests you, be it how it looks, age, mechanics, etc. You will be more likely to take it out and enjoy it regularly, thus becoming better at using it.
I use a safe for storage. Its in my room and I can get into it quick.

This was going to be my suggestion as well.
I have a Smith and Wesson M&P15-22 that is really fun and economical to shoot as it is only a .22. Haven't shot any of my other guns very much since getting this one.
Anybody shooting a .17? A few buddies have them and man they are really cool. Small projectile, no recoil, but it has some power for a small caliber.

howabouttheiris, Closest range is indoors (it's the police pistol range) and they only allow up to .22 rifles and up to .45 hand guns. The .22 sounds like a good starter and ok for what I want to do. It's cheap and I could always upgrade if I really get in to it/need something that shoots better distances. They also don't allow centerfire rounds. Is that going to limit my options a lot?
jryoung, I do really like the bolt-action style. My girlfriend's dad has one that we had a blast with last weekend. Something's just satisfying about cranking back that mechanism. I'd love to hear about what you've got in that department.
jason_ssr, Good advice. Kind of resembles my own sentiment. No matter which one it is, I figure a gun is going to shoot a bullet very quickly in the direction I point it. Best to find one I like the feel/look of a lot and go from there.
vette74, No kids. No plans for that for at least 5 years probably.

I second what everyone is saying about the 10/22, it's the rifle I learned on ages ago, and still have my original one. It's also fairly easy to clean and maintain. For a handgun, I have a pre-ban Ruger P-89 9mm (holds 15 rounds vs. 10) I have pretty big hands and this fits my hand perfectly. I've had a few other 9mm's (sig, H/K, S/W) but none have felt as well balanced in my hand.
I have a few other long guns, and shotguns that I keep in a gun safe. My P-89 is in the night table drawer next to my bed, no lock at all. I don't have kids at home, and if there is anything left after my pitbulls get done with ya, you can have it

We need more info on your rifle wants?
Medium or Long range?
Do you want to try to shoot small groups from a bench at known distances (Bench Shooting), or do you want to try to hit larger targets at unknown distances (More Tactical type shooting).
What would be your budget for rifle and scope. As mentioned before it is recommended to spend as much on the scope as the gun. That being said I wouldn't buy a cheap gun and cheap scope because of a low budget. I would go ahead and get a good gun and cheap scope to start shooting and then upgrade scopes later. There are plenty of lower end scopes that have descent glass and hold a zero.

Gunbroker has every gun for sale you can look at all different prices. Cheaperthandirt.com has a lot of guns now or go to the manufactures website. As far as a safe I might get ridiculed for this but since you don't have any kids around you really don't need one other than for theft. The cheapest safe that actually works good is $450 so if you are buying a $200 gun it would be like putting a $15,000 alarm system for your street bike. Once you get a couple of guns in your collection I would pick up a safe then.

I just bought a gun off gunbroker about 10 minutes ago!
A couple months ago I bought a FNH PS90 with the intention of it being something for my wife to enjoy shooting. Its light, hits hard, and has little to no recoil. After shooting it for a couple of months, Ive kinda fell in love with the 5.7 round. Its the same projectile as a .223 yet small enough case to fit in a rifle or pistol platform. Ive also been interested in the idea of having a pistol and rifle that shoot the same round. So, I just bought the FNH FiveseveN pistol to match the PS90. Cant wait for it to show up!

Talking guns is like talking football or religion. There are no right answers. Was not implying that they were the same, just listing 2 common options in the higher caliber range. As an F-TR fan, I personally think that 6.5 and 7mm are as big of marketing bull crap as the Mustang 5.0 liter engine. (all of a sudden teach folks metric and it makes better products?) Anyhoo......
Sounds like anything other than rimfire is out, so this is a non-issue.

I agree that a .22 would be a great first rifle.
Handguns seem to be a preference thing, but I had a great time shooting some .22 target pistols this weekend.

.22 would be really easy and cheap to shoot. Not much for home defense though. My first gun was a Springfield XD9. 9mm is still relatively cheap to shoot (not nearly as cheap as .22 though) and has a bit more power than a .22. Plus a 9 doesn't have too much kick which keeps you on target. Mine have 16rd magazines and I can unload the whole clip and get a grouping of about a foot from 25 ft. It's pretty tough to do that with a .40 or .45.
If your going to eventually buy a few guns, I agree a .22 is the best place to start. But if your going to buy 1 gun for target as well as protection I think a 9 is the way to go.

I have wanted to get a few guns for the past year. Turns out we have a gun range a few minutes from boardstop. Took the wife on a date and shot some handguns last week. Think we are going to shoot guns on Monday or Tuesday after work. Trying to decide on what to get.

Ruger makes a good .22 pistol, if you'd rather start with a handgun. But either way I always agree .22 is a great starter gun! I still shoot my Walter P22 more than my Glock .40 when we go as ammunition prices are so much better.

AR-15 for general shooting and messing around. The rounds are cheap and there are tons of mods and accessories available. For longer range shooting Remington 700 sps. Entry level bolt action but again has tons of mods and accessories available. For pistols shoot whatever feels right. 9mm is cheap to shoot. I prefer the 45 but I reload so not that big of a deal.

It would be hard for you to find a modern pistol that really sucks. Some are better than others but you'll find loyal followings for just about everything out there. Like most have said, just go shop around and get whatever you like.
I've decided to own at least one pistol that can shoot any rounds that are available. Guns last forever (or nearly enough if cared for); meaningful gun control efforts will likely first take the form of ammunition restrictions.
So far, I have at least one .380, .357, .38, 9mm, .45. I just ordered a Glock 23C which is their .40 version of the compact Glock 19 with the compensated barrel. I probably won't bother with 10mm or .50AE. I also have a couple of AR-15s (one pimped out, one plane-jane), a shotgun, and a beast of a 7mm Mauser. The shotgun is for home defense, the AR-15s are for when the government comes to take my shotgun
Happy shopping.

I'm from north of the boarder so our gun laws are quite different. Locked storage required for all rifles in the home. Also need trigger locks or bolt removed when in transport. Handguns have to be double locked.... basically only shooting when at the range or private property for rifles, handguns only aloud at the range no where else.
So yeah a safe, or even just a lockable rifle case/hand gun case would be the min in my mind.
For handguns I'd say get out to a range that has a proshop and test some out as others have mentioned. I love shooting a revolver, but semi-auto's are nice too.
For a starter rifle I'd say the Ruger 10/22 platform is great! I have 3! If you want the tacticool factor the SR22 will fill that! If you want something even cheaper than the Ruger with a bolt is the Marlin XT22. I have an XT17 so same gun just in 17HMR. Also a very nice gun to shoot.
Good luck and happy gun buying!

Hopping on here and not looking to start another thread about guns.
Ny question is in regards to females & which firearm is best for them.
How many here have a wife/GF who also handles firearms?
What is their preference & why?
What would you recommend?
Why am I asking - Target, personal protection, hobby? Not sure yet.
Being I'm not too keen about what happened 20 yrs ago with the Rodney King incident ( which I happen to be home from school when it all went down)
Now with Zimmerman incident and being within the region, I'm just keeping my options open for now.
Been thru the safety course, concealed weapon permit is down the road.
Thanks for input.

What is their preference & why? Wife has a sig p238 for carry and a Glock 9mm (forget which number) for home. 380 is light, they make it in rainbow (no, I am not kidding), small, shoots well and a decent amount of punch for a little gun. I love glocks which is how she got the 9mm. Also have a Kimber Ultra Carry 45 and may like that better than the Glocks.
What would you recommend? Depends on carry or home. Carry, Sig is great. Home you can go a little bigger so would go Kimber.

My wife has a concealed carry permit (unused). She's got a titanium .38 Special (Taurus) and a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm compact auto. She's comfortable shooting a shotgun and an AR15; I love that she's interested enough to go to the range and do some training. One note, a lot of women may look for a small pistol. Unfortunately, small auto pistols have very firm recoil springs (because of the smaller recoil travel), short barrels, and not a lot of mass. Those things conspire to make for a snappy, painful, and hard to manipulate pistol that is no fun to go shoot. My full size 1911 .45 is 10x more comfortable to shoot and handle than the smaller .380 or compact 9mm pistols we own. A great baseline to start with is the Glock 17, which is a full-size 9mm. Easy to find, easy to handle, comfortable to shoot, cheap, accurate, etc. From there you can adjust caliber bigger/smaller and frame size bigger/smaller.

Thanks Boys - From some unknown reason I knew 1st responses would come out of TX.
htownbdr, Cabana Boy & I have had discussions about firearms. He goes to the range 2-3x/month.I know he has at least 3 hand guns. He's looked at coming out here and going to the range with me with his arsenal. TX concealed license reciprocates here & 31 other states.
tball, Recoil isn't an issue with me & not looking to carry either. Glock was recommended by instructor for the Ladies.
What I really want is a shotgun & rubber bullets.

I would go shoot a few. Find out what cal works for you, then find one that fits right in your hand. In that aspect its like picking out shoes. Just because it looks good doesnt mean they fit you right. The most important thing is being able to hit something with it. Its been many years since Ive seen a pic but I recall you being a petite lil thing, so I would go with a full size 9mm, or for the ultimate go with the one I mentioned above and get an FN Five seveN. Kinda pricy but offers the ideal characteristics for a lady. Light weight, no recoil, and high capacity. My wife has the PS90 rifle mentioned above that shoots the 5.7 round and loves it. She is tiny as well. I would avoid the small guns. Yeah, they tuck away easier, but they are harder to shoot, recoil more, hard to be accurate with, and not gentle on the hands. After shooting a pocket 380, my hands come home bruised so I cant imagine what they would do to soft ageless pearl cream hands. LOL
