Good news!

I filled out an application for the detector dogs and hadn't heard back after 2 days. Today I got the call while i was in the library, so i couldn't answer. I called back and they let me know my application looks good, and invited me to come to the facility to look at the dogs. I'm extremely happy, as I was beginning to look at doberman rescues which were a bit more pricy and the applications were VERY detailed.

Here are the dogs they say they have available on petfinder, however on the phone the guy said they only have 3 available.

So here are the options.

This is probably my favorite, due to the fact he just recently completed training and is the youngest, however the ACL tear scares me for future health issues, although they do inspect hips etc before they begin training
http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/25911109

These are the other 3 on petfinder. They say some of them may be lab mixes, however if they are they sure don't look like it.

I go over to their facility on Monday so i should have an update then.

Maxon has a cool look to him and it is kind of cool that he is more on the younger side. I can't see anything wrong with any of them looks wise and based on their bios. To me, it would be a lot about how they seem to you in person. Good luck...looks like you've narrowed down to a few good choices.

While looks are fine and all, you HAVE to meet all four and judge based on personality.

I picked my guy based on looks. I love him to death, but he was absolutely the dominate dog of the pack and is a very challenging pup.

I wouldn't trade him for anything, but personality is EXTREMELY important. Does he follow you around? Jump up? Seem skittish when you meet him?

As these are ex-working dogs, I doubt it will be a major issue, but something to consider.

That being said, way to go on the adoption instead of purchase. Adopted dogs know they were rescued, and are much more loving for it.

LOL was looking on my Blackberry, so don't have much patience to read things. Had I been on my laptop, I would've read them. Still think Denver is the cutest. But I'm a firm believer that your dog should almost choose you - you should feel a connection to them when you meet them!

Well, I went to the Detection dog training facility today. They had 2 available. Maxon and Bindi. Maxon was batshit insane. Jumping all around his cage etc. Bindi was well behaved. Came out and was just dying to be petted. Ended up bringing her home. So far she's been great besides the huge dump she took in the living room. She seems to get along with everyone and is slowing getting used to her new life. She'll eventually be introduced to my roommates dog, as the other dog will be living with us till the end of may. Heres a few quick pics.

She doesn't seem to mind the crate too much. I put her in it after I got home and she was fine. Barked about 15 minutes later for a second, I told her to cut it out, and she did. So far so good.

Did they give you a rundown on all the commands she learned while there?

If yes, did you accidentally give the "take a dump on my floor" command?

And which command is the equivalent of "cujo, sick balls"?

one thing i've learned w/ my dog - walk him til he shlts before he gets in the car, and have a bag ready when we get where we are going. he's never crapped in the car (although i've had a dog that did in the past), but he's puked once on a long ride. some dogs just don't do great in the car. plus, she's in a stressful situation all around. i bet she's fully comfortable inside of a week or two, acting like he owns the place.

good on ya, chad! rescues are kick ass and that's a great looking dog.

chavez,
she was pretty good on sit down stay a while back, but since she was washed from the program, they haven't worked with her too much, she still knows what sit means. unfortunately, they wouldn't tell me the sniffing commands.

Okie Boarder,
Thanks

jt09,
She seems to do fine in the car, besides the fact shes a goofball and sits in weird positions. I did let her run free a little bit earlier when I was over at my old fraternity house, she seemed to stay generally close, and would eventually come back after I called her name. This is a big goal to get her to learn that, so that she'll be able to come to the creeks etc and swim this summer.

TnR6Rida,
She knows all of her working skills which i don't know the commands for, but it seems like she was retired about 6 months ago and between then and now, she has been living in kennels etc, and didn't get much proper enrichment during the time.

Nice choice on the rescue. Check out amazon for cheap dog doys. Kyjen makes some of the best dog toys I've seen.

It kind of depends what you're looking for in a dog, but sounds like it would be better for you to go the adoption route. Keep in mind the adoption fees or even buying a purebred is probably not going to be your major costs if you do your regular annual vet checkups. You've usually got your vaccines for lepto/parvo, kennel cough if you want to leave them anywhere, rabies, and bloodwork profiles. I think for the two of mine just a regular annual checkup would be around $400-$500 assuming nothing is wrong with your dog - so just keep that in mind.

I'll second that a dog is good prep for kids, because I'm sure mine was worse than some kids for the first few months.

You definitely don't need 'champion' lines, but if you are looking into specific breeds, the positives are that a lot of known diseases and problems are bred out of the lines by good breeders. You also have a fairly good idea what your dogs temperament and behaviours will be and you can usually visit at least the mom or get info on both parents to get an idea of what characteristics your dog will have. That's the reason I've got purebred dogs and got pretty much what I expected after lots of research and no major health problems.

Good for you for rescuing though, with a breed like labs you can probably find a good lab cross even that will be healthy, but purebred or mutt it can always be a crapshoot in terms of health.

EDIT - looks like I missed that there was a page2 of this thread! haha... Nice choice on the lab!!!

My Border Collie just turned one! (and no, it's not still snowing Laughing)

I like Max's eyes.

assholes! Laughing She likes digging on the beach, but I rarely see her dig. She is however obsessed with fetching balls/frisbees/anything that moves and gets pretty bitchy if another dog wants her ball. She thinks they're interfering with her retrieving job, which she takes VERY seriously. Laughing

My dog Molly is a lot like Max, last year on the lake another dog retrieved her Tennis ball, Molly tried to drown the dog, the owner lady started crying!

Unfortunately Bindy isn't much like Max. Max and Bindy would probably get along, because so far Bindy doesn't like chasing balls too much. Gonna find out today what her opinion of swimming is. Does max like to swim?
