Inboard prop is much closer to the bottom of the boat.

cheers buddy
so on average i can assume that a prop on an inboard has less of a chance of hitting rocks than an i/o as the i/o prop is much lower?

cheers

True. But you also have to think about the other determining factors.

If you hit a rock with an inboard prop, it's pretty much destroyed, because they are made of brass.

I/O props are also guarded by the outdrive and usually able to be repaired in the event that it is bent.

I've never hit rocks with either one (I've owned both), but those are the concerns that I have heard.

At speed, the I/O prop will sit lower although it is somewhat protected by the skeg (as mentioned above). However, when navigating shallow water at idle you always have the option of trimming up the outdrive which with some outdrives can bring the prop nearly to the water surface.
