They are hopeful for a 11:30MDT launch at this point. They've had to delay a bit due to weather.

"Jumping from more than three times the height of the average cruising altitude for jetliners, Baumgartner's expects to hit a speed of 690 mph or more before he activates his parachute at 9,500 feet above sea level, or about 5,000 above the ground in southeastern New Mexico. The total jump should take about 10 minutes."

WOW, just wow

Ahh Kittinger (the guy who's record he's breaking) had a bigger set I think, and he was doing this stuff in the 60's without all the technology and safety they have this time around. His autobiography is worth a read if anybody is looking for a new book, really cool stuff they were doing back then.

I still don't know how the balloon gets that high. It should only keep rising as long as their is air for it to be lighter than. So even if there is still enough air that high it seems like it would reach a point of just barely still rising. This was made more confusing to me when I watched a video of one of his earlier jumps. When they released the balloon it started slowly rising. It seems you would have to have so much hydrogen or helium at ground level that it would be really shooting up. It was moving so slow that it seems like it would reach a point where it would quit rising. How long does it take him to get that high?

That was awesome.

BBC documentary to follow if you missed the jump. Should be out in around 4 weeks.

I absolutely wanted to STRANGLE the commentator every time he started talking over the Baumgartner/Kittinger radio traffic. WTF.

Cant wait to see the other camera angles that were shot during the jump.

yep. the announcer was kind of a turd.

i couldn't believe he was able to stabilize himself after he started tumbling like crazy. i thought the emergency cutes would deploy because he'd pass out.

STPHNSN23, I know, I thought he was dead when he started tumbling like that. You could't hear breathing at that point. Crazy.

And the commentator was HORRIBLE.

The emergency chutes only opened if he hit a certain amount of G's from spinning

Very cool stuff. Pretty amazing that Kittinger actually still holds the record for freefall though, as I guess he waited longer to pull his shoot.

Don't know that kittinger actually pulled his chute. Not sure but I thought his deployed at a certain altitude. Kittenger couldn't see sh/t because his visor was iced and didn't know his altitude from what I read.

That was so cool. Thanks Zach M for posting that link - I had missed it yesterday and only got to see it on the sports highlights last night and that didn't really do it justice.

I've been doing a little more reading on Kittinger, the guy whose record Baumgartner beat. He was a badass. These are worth a read. The things he did with the limited technology of the 1950's and 60's is insane.
