Here is the outline and some black shading done.

A friend did it for free for me.

Here is an uncropped image.

It's about the size of a fist.

Have you ever seen a sugar skull? A mexican Day of the Dead skull?

Or sugar skull cookies?

Love that idea, super cool way to combine two things, recognized it right away. I'm a huge fan of those Dia de los Muertos style art/skulls.

Looks great.

thanks gnarshredd.

I didn't know what I was going to get until last saturday. The girl who did it just blurted out "I know, a sugar skull diving helmet!"

And I said... "Ok." I like both those tattoo themes and never saw one combined, so I figured it would be semi-original.

thank you.

I have to say though, this is the worst post-tattoo discomfort I've ever had, including the small one on my ribs and my inside bicep.

cameraboy, cool man, I had seen those. So you just thought it was cool and decided to go with it? No personal tie-in? Not hating, just curious.

Not really any super deep "meaning."

I could go ahead and assign some meaning to it, like say that it means to cheat death with a smile, or that the helmet is my protection against all the pressures and stuff pushing down on me, but whatever.

I thought it was a good idea, I liked the old timey diving helmets I had seen, I felt like getting tattooed, and my friend offered to do it for free, so I did it.

cameraboy, Why would you say it hurt more than the others? Was it the artist or just the location?

Been mulling over a tattoo for a while now and have had the same idea for one in my head for about 4 years now. I'm just trying to get my artist friend to find time to draw it and make sure I like it. Not to mention where I want to get it (Ideally ribs but I know how much that can hurt so I'm trying to figure out something else).

The location, for sure. The artist actually has a very light hand.

it was actually pretty easy, except when she got up near the pit of my knee. That stung pretty bad. Not badly enough that I needed her to stop, but I did need to put on my headphones and get some music on to get me through it.

I'm surprised at the discomfort yesterday and today though. The skin is really tight, and the muscle is sore too. I think it's just because I have to use my calf muscles to walk and stand.

My other tattoos didn't feel as tight or uncomfortable during the healing.

What's your idea, gnarShredd?

I have a small piece on my ribs. It was not nearly as bad as I expected. But people tell me widely varying stories about the ribs. Some say it was hell, some say it was not bad. For me, the small piece there (and it's up high, nearly armpit) wasn't that bad.

cameraboy, I want a lion head. My middle name is Leo and so is my dad and grandfather's. Kind of a cool family name that I want to continue and I've always been a fan of lions because of it. Plus the whole courage thing but whatever, it's more about my family.

I'm also considering having the word "Rodzina" hidden in the mane to represent my mom's side (the polish word for 'family') and maybe having the mane trail off in to looking like water (since my whole life has revolved around the ocean/water), but I feel like that's too cluttered/tacky so will probably just stick with a regular lion's mane.

That's cool. That's pretty wide open, as far as possible styles and such.

jryoung, love it.

Mine definitely needs to go in the "covered by a t-shirt" zone, hence thinking the ribs.

A tramp stamp could work though.... Laughing

Yes, inside your bicep is usually more uncomfortable than the outside, for sure.
