A little info:
been riding like 10 yrs
I'm 6'7", 250lbs
65ft, 20mph
mastercraft x-45
parks 143 board with fins in (this affects my ability to slide out a bad angle on landing, fins track hard)
I've been trying the backroll all last season and this one. I've probably done about 100-150 attempts. These videos are all from last weekend.
The problem is, I am the best rider in the boat every time by far. I'm not saying this to brag, I'm saying, no one ever has any input for me. I just have to watch my own videos and try to fix it myself. It is very difficult.
Please help me. I'm sure there's something I'm doing wrong, but I can't see it. If you refer to a specific attempt, just say the # in front of the video.
FYI, what my thoughts are on each attempt:
slow progressive cut in
strong edge at wake
extend and look up and over lead shoulder
(by now this rotation is dialed into muscle memory, maybe its a mexiroll?)
try (but rarely do) to find water and spot landing
then without fail, i either slip out or am tracking too wide and holding onto the rope is impossible (or I'll catch front edge).
I feel like I'm super close, but I KNOW I need help.
Thanks in advance
-Landon

I am by no means the best person to help with this but I do happen to see something that might help you.
In most of the attempts but specifically number 6. Your letting the rope out and away from you front hip. I know you can let the rope out to slow the rotation but your letting your upper body follow the rope and that is making the landing to hard. Also you using the low approach and I think the backroll should be a middle.
This is just IMO. Other than that you have this hold on to the rope. |

It looks like the ones where you squat less on the approach are spot on you are just letting go of the handle. Go to learnwake.com and watch the backroll videos on there _________________ Lithic, LLC, my biz

Looking good!
I only watched the first 2 attempts, but I'm sure all others show the same issues.
2 Things:
-you start out way too wide. Start your edge back towards the wake at like half (maybe 2/3) of the distance that you did in the video. Then focus on edging progressively and keep edging through the wake. Now you lose all your edge before you're even half way to the wake, and from there on the board is totally flat, zero edge.
- stand tall from before you start your edge until you're in the air. Look how much you squat when you approach the wake. Backroll requires standing super tall.
Try a few with these 2 things in mind and you'll stick it within 5 tries I'm pretty sure.
Good luck! _________________ FlyZone Wakeboarding Costa Rica |

your really close. i just landed my first backroll last week and i was kind of having the same struggle you were. couple things i noticed.
1. your knees are staying bent all the way through the wake like fly zone said you need to stand tall at the wake to get the pop you need.
2. start the flip with both hands on the handle but half way through drop your backhand, this will allow you to control your spin a little bit better and you wont over rotate like you did on your first 3 attempt and it will allow you to ride away with the boat.
i hope this helps man and good luck! there is nothing like landing it for the first time. |

Duct tape your hand to the handle. You've got that, just hang on! From the info you posted it seems like you've taken a fall or two when you have hung on but that's the solution here. You've got a mental block from the times you have fallen and are scaring yourself.
Yeah, sometimes your pop could be a little better (wait just a half a second longer and stand taller, you're not getting all of the wake, the one at about 1:00 looked decent on timing, but still could use improving), but that's stuff you can also work on once you land the trick. Some good advice in this thread so far. Try what FlyZone CR mentioned and that will help for sure.
Short version? HANG ON TO THE HANDLE. Don't let an old fall give you a mental block. You've got this trick in the bag and are tossing it away because you're afraid you'll catch your edge.
*Note, don't really tape your hands to the handle. |

Awesome advice guys. Thanks so much. I am going to:
1) edge out less, start edging in later
2) squat way way less, if at all. stand super tall and strong at wake
3) commit to whatever hell the wakeboard gods have in store for me, but never let go of the handle
I have taken a few nasty falls (at least one concussion), good intuition GnarShredd.
LiveToRide36, this inspires me "there is nothing like landing it for the first time."
Everyone else, thanks so much for your help. I'll post the video of me sticking it soon
ps any other tips are highly appreciated _________________ Don't listen to advice from people who can't land that trick. My list:

Unforunately probably not until next weekend at the earliest, so the weekend of aug 4. I will post videos of those attempts and hopefully of my first stomp!
Thanks for your help. I hope to reward you by landing it on video soon! _________________ Don't listen to advice from people who can't land that trick. My list:

you'll get it, when I was learning them I got to the same place you are. I was getting on the board and pretty much hitting them but I kept popping the handle. A dude I rode with told me to pin my elbows to my sides and pretend there was a bar running through them that wouldn't let them move. I stuck the next one, I think it mostly got me over the mental block from falling on so many but keeping the handle in tight makes the landings a lot easier also. |

Interesting. I'll try that ridininmd. I'm pretty strong and even when I commit to holding the handle it seems to just RIP out. But I've never tried that move. I will, in addition to the other tips posted here. Next weekend can't come soon enough! _________________ Don't listen to advice from people who can't land that trick. My list:

Thank you everyone for your help. This weekend I got back down to the lake and was able to try all your suggestions, in addition to some stuff from learnwake.com--they gave me a personal video analysis.
I've been squatting less (although on this particular video I got pretty low), approaching from way closer and trying hard to focus on the handle position and never letting go.
Great advice everyone. I'd like you to share in my victory

Signature changed
hahaha it felt so damn good. It literally took me like a second to realize I was not only still riding, but that I had just done a flip. When I hit, I just went into "save the trick" mode, like I had done a million times on a wake to wake jump. Then all of a sudden I was standing and riding and my sister in law was screaming and the boat was celebrating.
ahhhhhhhh

Just to prove (to myself) that the first one with the super sketchy landing wasn't just luck:

FYI I made a video about my backroll journey, it includes a shout out to you guys. I really appreciate your help. I may not have landed it without the help of wakeboarder.com and its users.

Haha that's cool! Congrats again, you really were a man on a mission. So what's going to be the next trick?
(On a little side note/constructive criticism: see how much you're still squatting during the approach? Stand TALL and take it even bigger!)

Thanks. Ya I will work on my form for more height/control. I've landed 3 total now. Next trick = 360, then probably a raley. I'm super close on the 360 and I've done the skate raley so I'm ready to try it for real.
After that I have to work on my toe side. I'm a heelside hero
Since it is offseason, this is what my workout room looks like now. Made the panoramic picture myself. Been dreaming of making it for years. FINALLY
