Ok, my tower is factory installed from the manufacturer and designed for my boat. Clearly thought that would be enough to not have spider cracks occur, well that assumption was wrong... Long story short, faught with them and cracks repaired on their dime but I am left doing the reinstall.

I am looking for a material other than plywood to use as a sturdier backing plate to distribute the weight better. Factory only had a rubber gasket and metal plate to distribute the weight. What they had may of been sufficient as all the bolts were loose when I uninstalled the tower, probably the reason the cracks formed but who knows. I am adding more support just to be safe.

Opinions?

larger/thicker piece of rubber, and a larger metal backing plate to disperse the load weight more. also rubber under the tower mounts on the top of the gunnel

if you can get to it, reinforce the mounting area with more fiberglass. if you add about 1/8-1/4" in a 1' radius around the mount would be sufficent.

I ended up getting 3/4" plywood, cut them to 4.5"x8" and then bought some west system resin and hardener. Added some thickening fibers/silica to make a bonding peanut butter and bolted the brackets up till the PB oozed out from the sides.

I wanted to use a plastic kitchen cutting board but the resin wouldn't have adhered to the polypropylene plastic. The brackets will never get wet where they are located so they shouldn't rot.

I've still got the rears to do, but this should be a lot better than the tiny metal bracket and rubber gasket the factory used.
