I'm thinking about making an offer on an 1999 malibu wakesetter and i am debating weather or not to get a local marina to go inspect the boat for me. The boat has 500 hours on it and has been stored on the lift for that last couple of years without being used much. I know how to check the compression and fluids, but the guy i talked to at the marina said they would hook there computer up to it and check it out as well as running a compression test and looking over the rest of the boat. I'm not real sure what they check with the computer as i've only had older boats. Any thoughts on weather its worth paying $250 for the marina to check it out? Also, is there anything else i should look for when inspecting the boat? I am about 5 hours away from the boat so i would like to make the guy an offer under the terms that everything check out good. Thanks!

Malibu changed the hull in 2002, Nautique had the same hull from 96- 06, not sure about Mastercraft, there is probably a better hull than the 99 malibu, test all wakes before you buy!

The hull on that boat should be the SV23 wake hull. That being said, it was used until 04 on that boat, and continued on with Malibu's V-ride until 2008. That is a great hull, which also produces a good wake. If the boat has a wedge, it will be even better with a little nose weight.

I had a 2000 sunsetter last season with the same hull as the wakesetter, with the same engine. Mine had 670 hours on it and ran like a champ...so assuming it has been maintained properly, it is just starting its life. An alternative to the compression test would be a leak down test, which is something i'd let the shop take care of, and also have them inspect the impeller while they're in there since it can be a pain to do, assuming this boat is a v-drive.

That hull will put out a great wake!!!! They didn't start making the diamond hull(ski hull) till 2001. Stay away from that for wakeboarding.

"They didn't start making the diamond hull(ski hull) till 2001"
They started making the sv23diamond and wake hulls in 1998, I had a sv23diamond hull on my malibu response and it put out a Great wake!
If you get the 1998 sunsetter you get the sv23wake hull. If you get a sunsetter in 2009-2001 you may or may not have the sv23wake hull on the sunsetter, they made both. If you get a sunsetter after 2001, you will not get the wake hull.
The sv23 is a shape only and does not specify the size of the hull.

Yes this is correct. The wakesetter was only offered with the wake hull in '99, so he should be in good shape.
