I am leaning towards an x star, seems to be a few in my price range every time I look. Any complaints about these boats? Seems to be all positive from what I see.

balt, let me know what you find. i have been trying to talk my fiance into buying a boat, but with the wedding coming up we just dont have the extra cash. i considered trying to set up a boat share, and split payments with someone. let me know if you are interested in doing something like that. otherwise, i am always down to come out and ride and help you out with gas!

My fiancee is pretty amazing she let me start a boat fund, which I have gotten up to about 5k. Hopefully get it to 10k by the end of the season and put that down on an x star or something similar and finance the remainder. After the wedding I will know if I have a fair amount more to dump into it or if the wedding money will pretty much all be spent on a tow vehicle. Hopefully we get lots of loot for getting married.

The best advice I can give you. Register for everything you can for your wedding even if you do not really want it. Keep things on the registry at all price ranges. The reason for this is people will buy things off your registry if you don't. If it is not on your registry it makes it much more difficult to return. Some places even have return policies that allow you to only return something 1 or 2 times per year without a receipt.

You can use the returns for cash and store credit depending on the stores. We used Target gift cards for almost a year for groceries after we got married. I am sure you will get money but most people want to bring gifts. This sounds really bad but it beats have 3 sets of towels and crazy crystal picture frames etc....

Thank you for the advice funky bunch we definitely did this and we did BB&B because they will do cash on returns. I think most of the true cash will come from my family, but plan on taking PLENTY of the crap we registered for back. I just don't need that much stuff.

1998 xstar was direct drive, so it's not as desirable. I don't think they had a factory tower option in 1998, so the towers were all aftermarket.
1999 is vdrive, but it's main drawback is the lack of wraparound seating. A lot of people had problems with stress cracks with the tower.
2000 added wraparound seating, but had the same tower as 1999.
2001 added a new tower and the 3 piece sundeck.
I haven't seen many complaints on older xstars. I have seen them in pretty rough shape around $15k and some nice ones in the lowe to mid 20s

When I see low twenties I figure I'll offer 15 and buy a cooler seat or add something to make the 99 have pseudo wrap around

The pic doesn't show anything and unfortunately I know little about it at this point but I contacted the seller to find out more. My initial research seems to be that they don't throw great wakes but its priced at 3500. I'll post more info as I receive it.

Not for sure but I think the legacy's are pretty low freeboard. you will have a hard time surfing behind that boat. I think this boat is more like a comp than a sunsport or saltare. Supra People?

After scouring the internet the past few months I have really narrowed down my search. I think I will end up with a malibu sunsetter or a mastercraft 205. Doesn't look like I'll be able to afford a v drive at this point so these models seem to be the best wake for the buck. I'd like to know what major differences these boats have? Anyone hate or love one or the other? It will come down to availabilty at the end of the season but I see myself with one of these 2 boats most likely.

Man, I'm sorry I didn't respond faster, I've been busy with work. I answered your PM.

Bummer about the scam. The Legacy was the replacement for the Mariah in the Supra line. It's not a Comp, but not a Sunsport either. Great boats, but not real deep freeboard.

Between the Malibu and MC I'd go with the 205. There was a time where MasterCraft put a lot of thought into the overall boating function of a boat, not just the neato features. Those 205s and 205Vs are great boats. They eventually became the first X-star. The older Sunsetters are nice, but for ride, quality, and wake I'd go with the MC.

The budget breakdown chart says 94 and on, but i researched hull changes and says there was a big change in 96, just trying to get the facts straight. Anybody know anything about this?

Ya the hull on the 205 changed in 96. This is the same hull used for the original Xstar, then the X1, then the X2 i believe. My understanding is that the older style hull is still pretty decent for wakeboarding but the 96 and on hull is far better. I bought a 99 205DD last year and its got a great wake. With some weight in it the wake is far bigger and better than i will ever be able to fully make use of. If i was you I would still try for a Vdrive over the DD even if it means saving for longer. I love my boat but the extra room the vdrive offers would be great.

Yep later models were then to become the Xstar.

BaltFrog, something you need to remember. Drive them, and then buy what you are happy with. If you like one better than the other, don't let our opinions sway you.

Let's say the Sunsetter doesn't put out the better wake, if you like it, and it's features, then get it.

Ultimately, as long as you are happy with it, then that is all that matters. We'll just try to help ya not buy a pig. Laughing Laughing

I'm located in Canada so the prices here are quite a bit higher. I would think you should be able to find a pretty nice 96 or newer 205dd for around 15k or less.

Congrats, Let's see some pictures. I was looking at Prostars during my search. I'm glad you found one.

I picked up a 2000 SAN 210. Here is the link. We got it at the end of September and we have had it out twice.

Great looking boat you got there. I promise to put some pics up once I get the hull cleaned up. Its pretty heavily oxidized at this point. Also repairing some vinyl issues at this point too. I'll get her looking good and come show her off.

96 PS205 is a great boat. First year of the new hull.

I reworked my gelcoat over the winter. I wetsanded the heavily oxidized transom with 600, then 1000, then 1500, then 2000, then hit it with rubbing compound and a wool pad, then finishing compound and a foam pad, then waxed it. The difference is amazing. Probably 20 hours or so of work, but well worth it. It's amazing how well gelcoat comes back with some work.

So this is way overdue. I finally took a weekend off riding to temporarily clean the gel coat up before I go crazy on it this winter. Not pictured are my xm 9s. Still waiting on screwy exile to send me a part.
