Ha ha, I'm glad someone else has to do this. I feel like a sell-out, but I don't have much of a choice. I still try to buy the rest of my clothes at skate/surf shops, but the overlap in styles is starting to pull further and further apart. I can't wear flannel shirts and skinny jeans every damn day (or really any day for that matter).

I gave up years ago. I think I own one pair of board shorts now days. Wear them only for surfing/wakeboarding. They're awful for outdoor hiking when going through water, so most of my swimsuits are the columbia nylon shorts. I'm turning into a kook as if i wasn't already.

They should make you feel like a homo.

JUST KIDDING.

I feel you.

I work in a VERY corporate environment, and I constantly push the envelope by following the letter of the dress code but with "younger" styles.

Of course, I'm not young anymore, and at some point it's going to be just sad, I guess....

Haha. I'm right there with you guys. Last three clothing purchases, patent leather black shoes, geoffrey bean dress shirt and a DC hoodie with a mock PBR logo on the front

Lop, patent leather? What for, hopefully only for a black tie in a tux.

cameraboy, younger styles? What does that mean? It doesn't matter what age it's always appropriate to stay in style.

I suit up 5 days a week and really don't mind. As they say the man makes the suit, the suit doesn't make the man. Plus the women have been very complimentary and receptive to the suits.

I thought you worked at a tattoo parlor? New job?

I do this too, I'm the only one in my office that doesn't tuck in my shirt, but I think I get slack for being a Californian (or I don't and everyone comments how sloppy I look behind my back). If I can get a Quiksilver shirt instead of Gap, I will. I'm not sure when I'll start looking ridiculous, I just hope I notice. Don't wanna end up like the old surfers in So Cal that wear a Hawaiian shirt, khakis, and flip flops to a black tie function.

I mean that at some point, what was appropriate for a guy in his early 20's isn't as appropriate for a man entering his 40's.

In a professional setting a suit is a suit, there might be some variations in style choices but I guess I'm not following. I mean you can make some bold choices in suit-tie-shirt combos but nothing that would be a sign of age I guess. But I've worked with some fashion savvy older men that would put Shannon Sharpe to shame, though I think he's out there on occasion.

unless you are a professional wedding usher, there's no reason at all for a man to be wearing black patent leather to any job. i'm hoping this is one of those goofy lop-isms and you aren't really wearing super shiny black shoes to work.

simple, classic looks are the way to go. i found a brand/style of slacks that look good on me, so i have 5 pairs in various colors/patterns. have maybe 12-15 long sleeve button downs, mostly in solids, w/ a couple of conservative striped ones. one pair black, one pair brown shoes (brown ones look pretty similar to the ones in the op). keep it simple, comfortable and classic. i can wear most any shirt w/ most any of the slacks because of this - i'm not trying to think too hard at 5am when i'm grabbing my clothes for the day.

don't have to suit up at all in the current gig, but i may be going back to software sales and if so, i'll need to pick up another hickey freeman. too many people skimp on the suit - spend the money on a good suit and get it tailored. it makes all the difference in the world.

Agreed, a good tailor is key. I also spend on the shoes and found a good cobbler to resole them on occasion. Shoes and suits can last years if maintained so the upfront costs are justified IMO. Been doing the suit thing for about 6 years now and have 10, about 8 in rotation.

To think, I got kinda pissed a few weeks back when I thought I was going to have to wear ties to the office when clients were in. Glad I got to dodge that bullet!

Personally, I see (bad) suits and I think of salespeople who are trying too hard, and when I see ties I think of car salesmen. I think wearing a really nice dress shirt with nice khakis/jeans and sensible shoes sends the right message of professionalism and style without looking like you are trying too hard.

So I'm going with the dress shirt and nice jeans look lately. Stopped at brooks brothers last weekend and hooked up some really nice shirts on clearance. Any time you can walk out of that place with multiple items for less than $75 you have to be happy!

I recently got a really nice dress shirt that is a cuff link shirt. Haven't brought myself to breaking that one out, yet.

PS: pleated pants should die in a fire and go to hell. Laughing

At what point do black leather shoes become patent leather? I wear these a couple of days a week.

ohsix, those aren't even close to patent leather - just nice black shoes. black patent leather = tuxedo shoes.

In the rare event I wear a tux, I wear these same shoes, but usually have them shined. I got married in these shoes.

Those tux rental shoes look ridiculous.

I'm glad I don't have to suit up. Our environment is casual for the most part except for big project meetings. I can go from jeans and a polo, to jeans/khakis and a nice dress shirt and possibly a sweater for most days. Occassionally it is full dress pants, shirt and tie, but no need for a suit jacket.

ohsix, I have almost those exact shoes - just from Kenneth Cole. Definitely not patent leather, although they do shine up quite a bit. They are my "suit" shoes. If I had them back when I got married, I could have easily used those instead of the shoes that rented with the tux. Although, the shoes I chose with my tux were also from Kenneth Cole and we actually fairly comfortable.

STPHNSN23, I agree to an extent. My problem with tie no jacket is most guys screw it up badly, and end up wearing some crappy tie with a plain white or plain blue shirt, and end up looking like a cheesy car salesman. The worst in my mind is guys who still wear Polo Ralph Lauren or Chaps shirts in solids that clearly don't fit correctly (prob bought at Ross or TJMAxx). If you do it right, it can be pulled off without looking cheesy. The shirt has to fit right, and the tie has to have some style. I prefer striped and patterned shirts - even my "white" shirt has a subtle grid pattern to it.

Double ditto.

So now you all got me thinking... What shoes are appropriate with the khaki shorts we all wear around the office here in the summer? Running shoes or hiking shoes?

I typically were flip flops with khaki shorts, but shorts are not allowed in my office unless you're working on Sunday. If you don't have to shave and can wear shorts to work, does it matter what kind of shoes you wear?

Actually, flip flops are a little too casual for the office (weird, huh).

STPHNSN23 - Ironically, we spend a fair amount of time on boats for work but nobody wears boat shoes - flip flops or barefoot when on the water.

Dress slacks and a Brooks Brothers shirt for me. I've never owned a suit and have no intention of ever buying one. It's completely opposite of the industry I work in, but even when meeting with potential clients I tend to go with slacks and a nice button down. I own two ties and a sport coat if I really have to pull out all the stops. It's served me well over the years, so I think I'll stick with it.
