....Yep, here and Mystery, Alaska...'cept they are on a river...
I have thought seriously about making a rink out back for the winter, but I guess my motivation is lacking.... |

happens every single day up north in the winter. here's the pond we played on probably 3 nights a week when i was in hs. http://g.co/maps/rgt5y
put a case of beer in the snow and skate for an hour or two. still have kids out there every night - lit up w/ big ol' parking lot lights - not stadium lights, but good enough. big enough for 4 rinks - they do a tournament for charity every winter too.
had a buddy who had about a 2/3 of a rink out behind his house - just flooded a depression and oversprayed it all the time. |

The ice was ready, and so smooth, but that was until we got a some warm weather and rain for 2 days. Were back to square one now. Supposed to host a tournament this January, 10 teams double elimination real pond hockey rules and regulation pond hockey goals. All about the passing and dangles. |

Awesome! I hate cold/snow but skating on a frozen pond is something I've always wanted to do. Closest I've come is skating on a fake pond in Boston Common a few years ago. |

We used to play pond hockey on a small shallow pond as kids. It played hell on freshly sharpened blades though _________________

Just a question form a Sunbelt lifetime resident - How do you clean the ice after a hard skating session? Do you just re-freeze a thin layer on top?? |

That is the exact reason the LM is wearing Reebok skates(mine) out there and not Grafs(what he wears).... He didn't want to puck up his newly sharpened skates, as he was playing this morning at 5:00 and wouldn't have time for a sharpen.... |

Very cool. What is it about the pond that is bad for the sharp skates? _________________ If love is blind, why is lingerie so popular? |

It isn't so much bad, as it just makes sharp skates dull quickly. Think shaving a thick heavy 4 or 5 day scruff vs shaving an hour after you just shaved & what that does to a razor. Not only is the ice rough, but never know what is in it....a leaf, stick, dirt, duck crap....... |

Love pond hockey.
For those that asked about cleaning it, normally we just use shovels to get rid of the snow every hour or so.
We normally try to chop a hole in the ice and put in a pump - at night, we'll pump water into the surface and let it freeze so it's fresh in the morning. _________________ Impossible is not a a fact. Nice! Too bad it's not cold enough here to skate ourside yet!
We had a rink in our backyard for years. Shovels to clear it off and then dumping out garbage cans full of cold water to sit and freeze overnight. Not too thck though, or you'll end up with chippy/brittle ice. To smooth it out, you can mist a thin layer of hot water on top. |
