Hey Guys,

Been doing a little research on boat prices and 3-year retained values. I expected the big three (MC, Nautique and Malibu) to hold their values pretty closely, but what I found was actually very surprising! The cheapest boat (Malibu) holds it's money best.... I always assumed MC and Nautique would be the ones to hold their money better, but not only are they more money to buy, but they lose money faster and %'wise they lose more!

Based on averages, here's what I came out with:

2008 MC X2 - New $62,980, Value in 3 years $42,660, value lost $20,230.
32% depreciation. 68% retained value.

2008 Nautique 210 Team - New $69,315, Value in 3 years $45,870, value lost $23,445.
34% depreciation. 66% retained value.

2008 Malibu VLX - New $61,000, Value in 3 years $44,740, value lost $16,260.
27% depreciation. 73% retained value.

Although this is seriously yawn-inducing, for those looking at a new boat it's well worth knowing!

Mike

Might as well add the best selling Vdrive 08 Mobius LSV

$39,390 new and value in 3 years $31,530, retains 80% value

the trouble with those kind of studies is that some use the MSRP as the starting point. I think we can all agree nobody pays the MSRP when buying a new boat.

they busted Honda on that a couple of years when they claimed they had the best resale value. They were taking their base new model and compared it with a used loaded model. They were being more tricky then that but that's kind of the idea behind it. Everyone can work the numbers how they feel like it.

I paid 55k for my 2005 x2. Last year I was offered 39000 for it. Granted I'd put a couple of grand into the speakers ect ect but I don't think you ever get your money out of a stereo anyways. That's what 30% or the boat has retained it's value to a tune of 70%.

Different models will do better as well. If you have a specific model where there aren't many around obviously they'll hold their value better which is probably my case. I don't see myself selling my boat anytime soon though.

I'd probably say from what I"ve seen though the X-star has the worst resale value. I just seems that buyers of that boat don't really care what they pay and if they are ok buying new and paying extra just to have their own custom boat. Who knows though?

Exactly.

NADA value or whatever you're using doesn't always reflect market price, especially the wakeboat market. I can't speak for MC or Malibu but I can tell you that the prices of new Nautiques rise so much every year that the used ones hold their value like crazy and are commanding much higher than NADA values.

Bought my 2004 Supra SSV new for $36,900. Just sold it to a good buddy of mine for $27,000. I probably could have sold it on the open market for $29K+, but I was happy to see it go to a good home. Even still, $10k depreciation in 7 years is pretty darn good!
