hey guys, im doing product design at uni and for my major project i will be designing a product to help reduce injury in wakeboarding.
Through research ive found knees and shoulders to be the most common body parts injured. Especially ACL tears and sprains. i have a few questions if anyone can help me out:
1. Has anyone here had knee or shoulder injuries? if so how did they happen?? was it twisting when falling? impact with water? etc
2. also would you now be more inclined to wear protective equipment? or is it too restrictive for jumping etc.?
thanks in advance, any help with understanding wakeboarding injuries will be greatly appreciated! hopefully i can come up with something to help you guys out! |

my worst so far is a slight concussion from a "slap goes the monkey" face plant! _________________ '08 Mobius LS |

thanks mseller, do you find the knee brace restrictive at all?
im actually considering some sort of release binding that releases with a lateral twisting motion in excessive force. obviously both feet would have to release at once however.
do you think this might have helped in your case? |

My biggest complaint about the brace is that I have to wear a sleeve when riding because the straps irritate my skin right behind my knee cap. Also the straps sometimes come unstrapped. So maybe come up with a ratchet system of some sort that doesn't irritate the skin from rubbing or place the straps in different places?
not sure about the release binding...i think it was just a freak accident...i dont know if the release binding would lead to other injuries(i.e hitting the board or something) |

| Torn MCL Grade 2 Tantrum Attempt. Has taken a year to fully heal. Knee still feels wierd at times. Worn Don Joy MCL brace for months and on and off braces throughout the year. Did acupunture and sports massage on knee to help it. |

I havn't been hurt, knock on wood. But a couple of my friends tore their ACL and one messed up his sholder. They were all due to twisting during falls so I have thought about wearing a brace for that reason but I've read it won't help prevent injuries to a healthy knee so i just work on muscle strength and knowing when to let go.
I don't know a wakeboarder who would wear break away boots but on the other hand, all my friends who have been hurt won't wakeboard anymore they only wake skate for that very reason... |
