So... after a few tows back to the ramp I think I have realized that it is time for a new Arco starter on my '83 S&S. At the end of a long hot day out the old girl refuses to start. After cooling in the garage over night it cranks right up... this leads me to my question. The last time we were out the breaker on the back of the motor popped... The next day I was able to push it in and fire the boat up... So I set up the fake a lake hoping to recreate this in a controlled environment... I did, after about 30 min of driveway running where I would run for 10 min then kill it, then start...run, kill it. Finally the breaker popped. But now, it won't stay in, even several days later. Does anyone know of these going bad?

Sounds like you have a permanent short now. To verify, unhook the battery and see if you can reset the breaker. If it does reset without power and then pops instantly the moment you reconnect the power, then there's a short circuit somewhere.

I reset it with the battery disconnected... it stayed in after I reconnected! Good news I reckon, starter should be on the doorstep today, so I will get it installed and driveway test! Can't wait to get out to the lake this weekend!!!!!!!!!
