"Impact Vests" honestly don't really do that much. It's more of another term for a non-coast guard approved vest.
Regular life vests offer the same if not more protection beacuse there's more padding. |

yeah an impact vest really just provides more flexibility because the padding is less thick and, therefore, less restrictive. They most likely will not be CGA and will not typically float well as a result. If you don't mind the loss of the safety factor, they sure are comfortable though |

yea, so they arent like body armor or anything... they only call them impact vests because the arent "life" vests... they take the sting away from hitting the water... thats it... a good neoprene CGA "life" vest will do much more to protect you from "impact" with the water. _________________ When life hands you a Jeffrey just rub the furry walls... |

They are worth wearing just to get the flexibility though. Cuts down so much of the bulk from the CGA jackets |

should the vest be tight fit? my friends says that the vest should be body fit because it will loosen up in the water. |

yes, all vests will loosen up some once used. You want a pretty snug fit when trying it on dry, but not so much that it's a struggle to get zipped/buckled. Nobody wants to feel like they need to lose weight every time they strap up to ride |

The Impact vests are just for if you don't want the added bulk of a regular vest. |

One more comment. If the water patrol really want to get you they will check your lifejacket you are wearing in the water. I got a ticket for wakeboarding with a "impact vest" and not a CGA lifejacket. |

Very true. A lot of the patrols look to make sure you have buckles on the vest (one of the tells of a non-CGA vest is that they just slip on over your head, no buckles). With that said, I've never been stopped for wearing a non-CGA vest while on the water but it's definitely a risk to think of.
Also, all cable parks (except for OWC and MAYBE Ski Rixen) require coast-guard approve vests to ride so if you ever go to one of those you'll have to rent.
It all depends on how you feel about comfort vs. safety. In any case, I make sure that a non-CGA vest will AT LEAST float me on the surface if something were to happen. I may not be face-up, but at least people can find me. I've seen some with little to no flotation at all and I avoid those completely. |
