Do you think this is normal for a 17 year old motor that wasn't loved, or do you think something worse has happened?

Other than the mildew what is wrong with it? They probably sat with the engine hatch closed with water in the bilge over winter.

Seeing what looks like water collected on the carpet as well, I'd say you might have more to worry about than just the engine. How old is this boat? Wood stringers and floor? If so I'd say you have a problem child on you hands.

As for the engine, I've seen worse looking engines that ran fine. You need to do compression checks, check the hoses, cooling system, etc.

If the boat is 17 years old too you won't have to worry about wood in floor and stringers.
Indeed check everything there is to check.

Interior. Worries me that the owner didn't even take the time to clean it a bit before taking pics to send to a potential buyer.

I wouldn't touch that thing. If they're too lazy to wipe it down and get the leaves out of it before sending you pictures, they were probably too lazy to take good care of it.

Only buy that boat if you can get it for pennies on the dollar and have ample money for repairs. That thing has way too many red flags.

Contrast PD2's boat of similar age. That's what a well cared for boat should look like.

well cared and salt water use... though kind of an oxymoron ... 1500hours and still running strong says differently...

We did just upgrade to a new to me boat.. so this one is for sale...
