wake on a 1969 correct craft

Title says it all. My family spent some time surfing last summer and caught the bug. Looking for an inboard for boarding/surfing without breaking the bank. I found a really cool looking 1969 correct craft that got me thinking, it LOOKS like it should throw a nice wake, but I'm just not sure.

This would be a "extra" boat just for boarding and surfing (I would be adding balast). I say this because I understand the seating limited and a 42 y/o boat has tons of potential problems. I am just wondering if anybody has experience getting a surfable wake from an antique.

If you're looking to surf, you're going to want a V-drive. The engine weight in the back of the boat makes a huge difference. I'd be worried about putting enough weight to surf in a 1969 boat.

Check out the early 90s Nautique Excel, one of the first V-drive ski boats on the market. I haven't seen the surf wake specifically, but a V-drive will help you a lot, and that's one of the first ones made, which will make it the cheapest.

While I'm still interested if anybody has specific info on older correct crafts, lets open it up a bit.

I also used to think the V-drive was important for surfing, but I've seen a lot of chatter on the forums about surfing being just fine behind a direct drive if weighted correctly. In addition, I've seen several folks in person surfing behind dd boats, so I know it can be done.

Question to you all is, how important is the V-drive for surfing?
