So obviously im planning way ahead, but im looking to get some tower speakers for my new boat (when i get it).

The WetSound Pro 485 looked super nice, and loud enough that I would only need 1 set.

My question is, can I power these off a mono block class d amp? I have an amp already that does 500x1 @ 4ohms, which is plenty for these speakers, but i was wondering if they needed like a 4 channel amp bridged for some reason (since they are producing mid / highs / bass and not just bass which most mono / class d amps are used for)

You wouldn't want to do that I don't think. You really need to run these off of a 2 or 4 channel (bridged) amp. The 485's are a total of 4 ohm each. They need to be well powered. Look at the specifications for a syn 4 amp bridged. You want to shoot for the same rms levels or more. I've been told that underpowering 485's can lead to problems.

Im only going to run 1 of them, and it looks like there is only 1 connector on each "pod"

It seems that the entire system is wired to 4 ohms and capable of 300w / rms and 600 w/peak. I have plenty of power coming from the mono class d amp ...

Unless it has multiple connections on it?

yea i guess running a mono amp is not the right choice ... looks like i have a subwoofer / amp for my boat already haha...

now i need to find an amp to do ~300 -400 w/rms at 4 ohms stereo

Most mono block amps are subwoofer only. They only play the low freq and only have low pass crossovers.

You will want at least 300 watts rms. But we run the SYN-4 in 2 ch mode for 400x2 as our standard and some run a SYN-2 mono for 700x1 to each 485.

The 485's can handle some power but when running that much, very careful tuning is key.

One thing to consider is use the SYN-4. Half on the 485 and the other half could run 2 pairs of in boats.

Or you could run the SYN-6 with chs 5-6 on the 485 for 600x1 and run up to 4 pairs of in boats off chs 1-4.

Thanks tim, i ended up going with a JL 360/2 amp which will put out 360x2 bridged. I will probably start with just 1 channel and if i need more power use both channels...

pimpin,

You MUST run that amp bridged mono. That amp will do 110x2 at 4 ohms or 360x1 at 4 ohms. (not 350x2)

So the only way to get enough power would be to bridge that amp mono on the single 485. The 485 is a 4 ohm load.

So make sure you wire it bridged mono, run it high pass at around 80 HZ and rock out!
