In the fall when I winterized, I managed to break the fitting at the bottom of the oil pan that goes to the drain hose. I struggled to find a fitting that swiveled so I wouldn't have to life the engine. In talking with DIM, it seemed like they had a solution with the swivel fitting, hose and everything. I received that part yesterday and the part of the elbow fitting I need to have swivel doesn't swivel. I need somewhere around an inch of clearance. So, what's going to be the best way to get that, in your opinion?

I was thinking I could straddle the span with a couple 2x4's tied together and ratchet strap the back end of the engine / trans after undoing the lag screws holding the mounts in. Would the 2x4's and the gunnels support the weight?

The other option I was thinking about would be to just turn the rear adjusters up enough to give me the clearance.

Thoughts?

i would buy an engine hoist. the gunnels are not strong enough to support an engine. at least i would never try it.

Keep in mind, I only need to lift the rear...the front will still rest on the mounts on the stringers. I also only need it lifted about an inch, just long enough to thread in the elbow fitting.

If you can do it with the rear adjusters, do it. If not, just rent an engine lift for a couple hours. I wouldn't want to put my hands under something that heavy that wasn't supported well.

it might support it, it might not. i wouldnt want to take that chance with my boat. if it doesnt, your riding season is done for. i would rent an engine hoist. the $30 for the lift is cheap insurance.

OK, decided to go a different route. I couldn't get the hose assembly to work and it was getting to be too much hassle to find fittings. I also wanted to avoid the engine lifting at all costs. Decided I'm putting in a regular car drain plug and buying a Pela pump to change the oil. Problem solved. Mr. Green

Thanks for the input!

Southern way would be to back the boat under a large tree. Hoist engine up on a large tree limb. Haul boat off so you have easy access to work on boat engine. Leave engine hanging from tree forever. (For best results use a tree in the front yard)

Even though you're done with the project, I thought I'd share how I did a whole motor swap on mine.
I used a car hoist. Granted my buddy has one in his garage, but you might have been able to get a shop to help out with this for min charge if at all.
We lifted the hoist up, then back then the boat in.
Lowered the hoist arms just above the gun wall. Strapped under the motor between the two arms; lifted up.
I'll keep looking for the pic.
