We sail near a popular kite spot. Not sure how or why they do it. This area is extremely contaminated and polluted. Asbestos washes up on the beach frequently. Probably buried on the beach.

I have stopped going in the water myself.

Well, I am a few months into my sailing endeavor. Here are some of the highlights or low points so far.

Finally sailed in shorts and a t-shirt.
4 or more races cancelled due to weather.
Had one race with winds pumping around 25kts, once we left the harbor they picked up to 37kts. We had to drop the main and power in. We found a tear in the main.
We blew out our old number two jib right after starting another race.

Been a pretty crazy/fun experience so far.

Attached pic was a wed night race (tore the main on this race), as we were leaving the harbor I heard two things.

1) GET ON THE BOW! (Do I really need to right now? Smile )
2) HOLD ON!

It really picked up (from 20-25 to 37kts 3-8ft) and the captain was concerned I might never come back after this experience.

Great advice right here. !!!!!!!!!!

The boat i'm on has one motto. The team who has the most fun wins. Naturally we want to be competitive but we definitely have the most fun.

I am so lucky to be invited and invited back with this crew and Captain.

It's was better once the waves picked up and started to blast me on the rail. Water temp in that pic was around 55 surface and freezing a few feet below with air temp in mid upper 50's. Two weeks ago Wed.

If you ever want to come out just let me know. It's never a problem with the Captain. You can barely tell I was holding on with one hand and throwing a Shaka in the other. LOL

Man I want a sailboat. Someday soon hopefully.

We are planning a trip maybe late summer to rent a boat and sail her to Monterey or SC. Should be fun if we can get it put together. 8 people or so, 40' boat, plenty of refreshments and open ocean. Hell to the yes.

Can't wait for the invite. Maybe a big sled like a Santa Cruz 52?

It's a lot of work for the bowman! Laughing Laughing Laughing We flew the kite on Sat & Sun with a skinny crew. Sunday evening, I was pretty tired.

We have only flown the chicken chutes ( I think ) so far.

That would be so much fun. There were people doing that on cats in BVI. Looked like so much fun.

It'd definitely be good to have another hand on the boat that knew what the heck they were doing....

Consider that yer invite. If we get it put together that is. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks for the invite and I am certainly flattered.

Ocean sailing is very hardcore and I certainly don't have enough experience for anything like the above said trip. Don't get me wrong, I would love to go but I am not going to misrepresent myself or my experience.

I would buy one of these little guys before any ocean trip. They should be coming out anytime. Great for not only water but also land use.

This is the kinda shi at that freaks me the f out. Fresh water mammals are much more boat friendly! Smile

Breaching whale smashes mast of sailboat off Wash.

This happened in 2011.

Email
Print
– Fri May 13, 1:01 am ET
ASTORIA, Ore. – A breaching whale smashed the mast and rigging of a 38-foot racing sailboat in a Pacific Ocean encounter off southwest Washington on Thursday, leaving bits of blubber behind, the sailors told the Coast Guard.
Crew members aboard the L'Orca were safely in the cockpit and unhurt during the encounter, said Ryan Barnes of Portland, Ore.
The crew said the whale did not appear seriously hurt.
The whale strike happened about a half hour after the L'Orca set out Thursday morning from the mouth of the Columbia River off Astoria in the 193-mile Oregon Offshore International Yacht Race to Victoria, British Columbia, Barnes said.
Barnes is the son of boat owner Jerry Barnes of Sandy, Ore.
"All of the sudden, a few inches, a foot maybe off the starboard side, a whale came breaching out of the water," Ryan Barnes told Coast Guard Petty Officer Shawn Eggert in a video interview. "It looked to be a humpback whale, about 30 feet in length roughly.
"It hit the mast about halfway to three-quarters of the way up, and then proceeded to fall forward and on the starboard side of the boat."
Barnes said that brought down the mast and the rigging.
Eggert described the bits of blubber left behind as "maybe a scrape for a 30-foot whale."
The L'Orca crew called for help and a Coast Guard motor lifeboat from nearby Ilwaco, Wash., helped bring it safely to port in Astoria.
Orca is another name for the black and white killer whales often seen in Northwest waters

SF to Monterey should be fairly straightforward, keep the land on the left and you will get there. Just need to find a decent weather window which shouldn't be hard.

He's done the trip to Half Moon before... apparently there is some rock formation out there that you have to be aware of, but other than that yeah, land on the left, head south!

8824, Laughing Come on down Louie you'll fit right in!

Also, I will be taking my Spot tracker on the trip. I use it primarily for my MC, but this is another ideal purpose for it. If you want, you can track my dumb ass during the rally I'm doing this weekend. 24 hours, appx 1000mi, boom! http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=2e404de45ae3cde91

First offshore race is coming up. Should be fun, except for the forecast.

I have never taken a boat from Chicago up the north shore towards WI. Pretty stoked for the race and just for the overall trip.

Had a major development take place in my short sailing career so far. Details to come soon. Laughing

July 1st I am doing the Queens Cup. It's a race across the lake from Milwaukee, WI to Muskegon, MI. The race starts at 7PM and the race is at night.

Never crossed the lake on a boat, let alone at night. If I can handle this, then the grand prize might be there for me to take. Cryptic, I know.

I am doing the return which is a longer ride back to IL. Approximate 19hrs or so.

Ok. Just because I trust you guys. Laughing Laughing

I was invited to do the Mac and the return. Somebody dropped out and the Captain feels that I have really stepped up during my first season and have shown composure in some gnarly weather already. In addition, I seem to fit in well with the other crew members. Really a nice compliment.

I am flattered and freaked. If the Queen's Cup doesn't go well I will not do the Mac. Trying to find a dog sitter right now. Girlie is out of town that week.

About the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac: At 333 miles (289.4 nautical miles), the Race to Mackinac is the oldest annual freshwater distance race in the world. ‘The Mac’ starts at the Chicago Lighthouse, just off Navy Pier and continues to Mackinac Island. 2010 marked the 102nd Running of the Race to Mackinac in which 362 boats competed in the third consecutive sellout of the Race. The Race has also amassed a strong following using technology and social networking; it can be followed virtually using Facebook, Twitter and its Race tracking interface. The 102nd race and yacht club site was visited by over 300,000 website visitors

From Wiki.

The Chicago to Mackinac Sailboat Race is run by the Chicago Yacht Club. It is one of the longest fresh-water races in the world, with hundreds of boats entering the race each year. It starts off the mouth of the Chicago River in Chicago, crosses Lake Michigan, barely enters Lake Huron, and finishes in the Round Island Channel, off Mackinac Island, Michigan. The race course runs 333 mi (536 km). 294 boats completed the 2005 race with finishes ranging from 33 to 69 elapsed hours. Steve Fossett set the overall race record, 18 hours, 50 minutes, in 1998 with the yacht, the Stars and Stripes. Roy E. Disney set the monohull record, 23 hours, 30 minutes, in Pyewacket in 2002.
The Chicago to Mackinac Race is often confused with the Port Huron to Mackinac Boat Race. They were held on the same weekend until 1939, when both clubs agreed to alternate the date of their Mackinac races, scheduling them a week apart.
The first race was run in 1898, with the sloop Vanenna winning against four boats. The 100th Running was completed in July 2008.
Sailors who have completed 25 of these annual races are called Island Goats. In 1959, The Island Goats Sailing Society was formed with 10 of these sailors to perpetuate and commemorate the Chicago to Mackinac Race, along with its legends and lore. By 2008, the society had grown to 270 members in good standing.[1]
The 103rd running of the Race is planned to begin on July 16, 2011.[2]

Thanks!

Had an interesting talk today with the Captain. The deal is not done yet, but it looks good for. Main goal on this trip, keep me safe and gain more experience.

Oddly enough, the eight other members of the crew I have sailed with at least once this season. Really a super solid group of sailors. Current and former instructors plus an overall Mac winner from a few years back. Combined for over 100 Mac races.

I am really fortunate to have such great people teaching me and letting me join their crew.

I may be on the island for the boat race. If you've never been to the island (especially that weekend) it's a blast. Lots of partying and good times. When Seger won the Port Huron/Mackinac race, he did an impromptu concert/jam session at Mission Point.

Lots of great places to eat/drink on the island. Mussels Diablo at the Yankee Rebel are awesome. Pink Pony has a solid patio on the Marina. Horns always has live music and is my favorite bar on the island. It's across from the pony and both are right next to the marina.

Also remember to watch out for the horse stuff!

Well, my first taste of it will be July 1st from Milwaukee, WI to Muskegon MI. Race starts at 7PM.

They read a journal entry from a previous Mac yesterday for me. Basically, 12kts under a reefed main from 1-3AM until the chute blew out etc etc. Reality hit hard.

What did I sign up for. It's official, I am in the race.

Had my first point to point on Sat. Went from Chicago up to Waukegan. Pretty decent ride except for the fog which blocked my view of the north shore for almost the whole race. And the 1.5 hrs of dead air. I think at one point we went backyards.

Good experience and pretty fun.

Looks official, I am doing the Mac. I have a race coming up next weekend which will be my first overnight race and first time crossing the lake. Race is from Milwaukee to Muskegon and starts at 7PM. These people don't porkchop around.

As far as the title of the thread. Sailors seem to come in two categories. Poodle or Pirate! ARRRRRGGGGG!!!!!!
