It doesn't start until next week...

You can track it here...

Not sure what boat he is on though.

I won't be up there this year for the races muck, I'm headed up this weekend though. Let me know if you have any questions.

It's the same race...

EDIT: I got my dates/races mixed up Chicago to Mackinac is this week, Port Huron to Mackinac is next. My bad... Muck is probably too busy getting shitfaced right now though. I think he said he was doing the back from the Mac too so he probably won't be online until next week.

I had heard about that and was curious if his boat was ahead of the storm. I saw his finishing time and was looking for the details.

Had a cool dinner last night with a few of my Dad's racing buddies. Nothing funnier than old sailors.

I have known some of you guys for a long time. This has been hands down one the of the most messed up weeks.

Due to the link below I could not do the return. This was a very close friend of mine who was a true WATERMAN in every sense of the word. I received the news after we docked and checked in.

http://fksa.org/showthread.php?p=48592#post48592

Lloyd and I shared waves and the general love for the water and snow. I held my own water ceremony on the island for him.

As far as the storm. We were ready for it. Took our 1.5 chute down ( we luckily missed the worst part) put up our 3 jib and should have reefed our main. We saw 47 max TWS. The crew was calm, alert and ready. I have some pics and video. My boat and crew made the island in their fastest time every. The crew claims it was the best, fastest, easiest Mac they have done with nearly 100 combined races. I was very fortunate to be on their boat. Another J120 Jahazi was rammed and comprised during the storm. Luckily they made it shore with nobody hurt on either boat.

There was some serious carnage. Holy Bubb Rubb guys!

Glad you made it. My condolenses.

Would love to hear more about the race. All reports are of big wind which always comes with stories. Hope you enjoyed the race despite all the heaviness.

Race started on Sat afternoon, cruised up the IL/WI coast due to our weather reports. As it turned out, they were wrong. Wind died along the coast and picked up in the middle of the lake. So we went across the lake and had a sick sun from the morning to late night. We were cruising with the spin up and the weather was perfect. Flying the spin almost the whole time.

Sun night, waves start to build from behind us and we started surfing waves (3-6) with the spin out. We were cruising around 9-14kts. 14 was our fastest speed with a solid 9-10 for hours. All of a sudden we see a blob on the radar. By this time we cut across the lake and was cruising near the Manitou Islands. Around 1AM on Mon the storm hit.

We dropped the chute and started to fly our number 3. We should have reefed the main but our highest winds were 38ish.

The crew was calm, ready and alert. No panic, just complete heightened awareness. I think we missed the heavy parts. Definitely not as bad as others had. After the storm we came close to land and was able to get some news on the boat and crew that capsized.

Wingnut a Kiwi 35 capsized with 8 people on board. Six were rescued by a boat called Sociable. Two were found dead in the morning in the capsized boat from head trauma. Very sad. It was really a heavy feeling on the island. Flags were all at half mast, services, and many free drinks for the crew of Sociable from what I heard. Other than this accident for Wingnut, we had a solid race.

According to the crew, our boat had it's fastest time ever, easiest, best Mac race minus the accident. They told me this was a racers dream. Great solid wind the whole time with no drama or issues.

One boat were we racing against (another j/120) was hit in the storm by another boat. They had a hole and was able to make it safely to shore. Thankfully, the boat and the crew from both vessels were not hurt.

The Great Lakes are serious, I have always respected the lakes and weather. It was an experience that still gives me goose bumps.

I did take some video of the storm and a bunch of pics. Let me see what I can do.

I can not shrink the pictures any smaller than 456kb.

I am using iphoto and the pics are in the 5MB range. Any ideas? I wish this site would just autosize.

I did a file export, and also tried a manual resize. down to 336kb.
