If you have Windows movie maker on your PC, start messing around with that. It actually suits most people just fine. I started with it, then tried Adobe Premier ($150) and hated it. Bought a MacBook Pro, then iLife 11, now I want Final Cut $$$$$. This hobby got expensive. But I've made some $ back with it doing wedding DVDs Vacations, funerals, anniversaries, etc.

It sounds like the video editor that is sometimes preinstalled on your computer is all you need for what you'll be doing (although they can be a bit clunky interface-wise). You'll be able to cut clips where you want, add basic transitions and text, and edit in music; which is all you'll probably really need to start with.

Windows has Windows Movie maker, and Macs have iMovie.

If you don't have access to those (I think you can download the windows one from their website and iMovie isn't that expensive on macs), there are also a few third-party options online for free software, check out download.com and you can look at ratings and probably get a decent, free video editor.

Almost any editor will give you the basic ability to add-in audio and cut clips to the size you need. Most will have transitions and the ability to add text.

Windows (Microsoft) Live Movie Maker is supposed to support MP4 format. Are you using that or the built in Movie Maker (Vista/XP)??

There's a really useful article about how to edit footage from the GoPro HD, that you might find helpful at http://www.actioncamerasblog.com/2010/05/24/382/
