Definitely intriguing but this is a proof of concept demo video. A lot can change from what they want to do and what they actually end up with. RIMM isn't exactly the champion of touch interfaces.

Pros -
Flash Support (Satandard on Gingerbread)
HTML5 Support (Standard on Gingerbread)
SD Card compatible (Standard on Galaxy)
Video Conferencing
HDMI Out

Cons -
WiFi only (No 3g yet)
Same specs as every other tablet that will be out in the next 6 months

Meh - I know you work for them and I respect that but this is the same tablet that every other company has coming out in the near future and by the time it hits shelves (Guessing 1st - 2nd quarter 2011) the hardware will be middle of the road and the app market will be marginal. I predict this will get lost in the sea of other players and get beaten by more powerful yet cheaper Android based tablets. BB has a tough line to walk. You don't want to alienate your current enterprise customers but the growth is in the general public sector. BB has shown to rely heavily on their reputation. This is obvious when looking at the new phones that are really just mildly repackaged old phones. Even the Storm III is shaping up to be another Storm redux.

J-Ro, I'm looking forward to 3-5 years from now. This first round of tablets from everyone will be not so good but if I can replace my laptop with a tablet (or a tablet that docks in to a keyboard for a laptop-type mode) I'd be down. Too bad battery tech still sucks...

GnarShredd, That's why I am waiting for the HTC tablet. They have a lot of Android experience, Sense is better than any other overlay, and they won't put out an outdated tablet.

J-Ro, dual core processing is on the roadamp for others? I don't think so, software needs to be able to catch up there....Ability to manage as a corporate asset through the security of BlackBerry without adding additional VPN or other costly software...a lot of value there. Need to look past the specs (which are the best) but to the value of the infrastructure and solution to IT departments.

my opinion of course

Dual core processing is on the way, other devices will have those specs by Q1 2011 as well. Looking at the stats for the PlayBook, I would assume it's based off the omap4 platform, which lots of other phones and tables will be using.

There are only a handful of companies making mobile processors (qualcomm, ti, apple). That's why so many tables have the same hardware specs.

Like andrandre said, a lot of the tabs coming out in Q1 are based off of dual core processors. Gingerbread is optimized for tablet and dual core use. I see your VPN point but I think there is a difference between corporate email and corporate network access, no?

J-Ro, corporate email and corporate infrastructure connectivity, with BlackBerry, is the same thing.

J-Ro, I can do that now, on my iPhone. Also on the iPad. Securely.

It's called Citrix and it works fantastic.......................

I don't see what the Playbook is going to do (for accessing corp infrastructure) that Citrix hasn't already. BTW Citrix receiver is also avail for Android OS.

When the Android based iPad competitors saturate the market here in the next month or so, I don't see where the BB device really fits in.

chavez, that's what we use too. I was curious if you could actually use the BB client to get full network access.

I am waiting for the first HTC dual core with sense in Q1

I can't wait to get off Blackberry and onto Android or iPhone. The lack of apps on BB is a joke in comparison.

^If you go to the iPhone, have fun with the chitty battery life compared to that of a BB though - doesn't sound bad, but it's a crappy trade off (especially for work).

^ Right on. Leaning towards Android, just hoping for a new shiny model to come out around the holidays.

Also hoping this comes true: http://mashable.com/2010/08/18/google-verizon-tablet-2/

Rhawn, Androids can suck a mean battery too.

It all depends on the app being run and what resources it uses. GPS apps, streaming apps, even some games are life-suckers and will kill any phone's batt.

If I just use my now 2 year old iPhone 3G for "work" the battery will easily last me a day. To me, work = email, calendaring, text, and a bit of talk time.

FWIW, the i4 is supposedly a bit better than my 3G with the batt life...

Nor*Cal, 2 for sure - the Samsung Galaxy and the Dell Streak (smaller than iPad).

Acer, MSI, HP, Viewsonic, and others are imminent. Like imminent as in just in time for Xmas...

Nor*Cal, Wait until they come with Gingerbread (2.3 or 3.0 they haven't decided the numbering yet) as the OS. Froyo doesn't play well with tablets and Google has said that Gingerbread will be/is designed for tablet use. I am hearing late Q4 or early Q1 and I am sure the second it comes out the tablets will follow.

RIM's enterprise monopoly is based soley on its security policy capabilities.

New secure smartphone apps are taking over and rendering the combersome BB enterprise service obsolete.

RIM should really get into the modern hardware and secure app game, and leverage their name. The monopoly cash cow is dying and they better have something on deck.

You think they'd see the writing on the wall. See: Nokia, or Motorola. Both were the best in the biz, and both sat on their azz and let the rest of the players blow right by them.

BUT

I know of plenty of people who swear by their BBs. It's like the AOL of phones these days - past it's prime but still has lots of dedicated users because they refuse to learn something new (and better).

Nor*Cal, HTC is 'supposed' to be putting out a Google OS tablet by Christmas on the VZ network.

Those of you that know something about the tablets, I've been looking at getting an Ipad for my wife and am probably going to pull the trigger pretty soon. She's been wanting a Kindle for books, etc. and to me it makes more sense to buy the Ipad, so that I can get some use out of it as well.

Based on the apps and the functionality of Apple's online store, is it the one to buy, or is one of the one's coming down the pipe probably going to be a better buy for Christmas? We're 100% Dell with our office if it matters for anything.

Also, I am one of those guys that loves my Blackberry Tour. I only use my phone for work related stuff like email, text, phone, etc. and it works great for that.

size = fail

Why didn't you guys, Samsung, Dell, et al get the message? People don't want a 7" screen in a tablet. They want a 7" screen in a eBook reader - maybe. But not on a tablet.

These 7" tablets are right in the middle of stupid. Too big for your pocket, too small for your hands for efficient screen typing, and too big for your thumbs for efficient screen typing.

Meh...

respectfully disagree...lots of research out there on 7"

it does look puny next to the 10" though.

Alter Ego, you can respectfully disagree all you want, but when the casual user puts the iPad and the *insert 7" tab here*, given relatively close pricing, which one do you really think they are going to buy?

yes.

What the video showed me was the playbook, while fast, is too f*** small!!!!!

I CAN type on the iPad like a full qwerty board. I cannot type on these 7" models unless I have the hands of a 10 year old girl or like to hunt n peck like the guy in the video did.

Go back to your overlords and tell those IDIOTS to use a bigger screen. Seriously, what the hell were they thinking?
