They're commonly referred to as pylons, rather than booms. A boom is pole sticking out the side of the boat commonly used for barefooting or teaching kids to ski/board.

Here's an old post covering one method of building a pylon:

Good luck!

you can buy htem for 200$ too if you were lookin fro that kinda route also, they make ones that have plates and everthing to adapt to boat that arnt inboard with a pylon, anf you can get the package for around 200(usd), otherwise good luck on your build, ever consider building your own tower?

for the basics your gonna need a sturdy pole, somthing to secure the bottom, and lines to secure the pole, boats with an exsiting ski pylon can usually use just one strap going to the front, others use one to the fornt and two to the back, in most situations.

ianmccabe3, Hi Ian, I'm in the UK too. You won't find much help on here for you project as Pictons barely made it out of Wales, let alone the UK Smile

Brilliant boats though, one of the truly wonderful brands of British boating history.

If you wanted to build a pylon for your boat it wouldn't be too hard... in fact I'll even tell you what you need! Just give me a shout in the office on 01270 872161 in the daytime and I'll go over it with you... We sell pylons and stuff here so I may have a second hand one knocking around, but failing that I'm more than happy to supply a parts list so you can DIY.

Most people these days tend to go for a Tower but in reality, if you just want something for very occasional use and want to keep spends down then a pylon can be a better alternative...

Varies massively, I'm a little confused now as to whether it is a pole or a boom your after.

is this a boom for over the side of th eboat or a pylon sticking straight up from the boat?

Ahh right.

Best to just take a good look at one that sin production and copy it Wink

http://www.jobesports.com/EN/Products/Boat_Accessories/Booms/Gunnel_Mount_Boom/

You'll need a long alluminium pole - around 20ft.

2 mounting brackets to attach the thing to the deck and then a ratchet strap to attach the tip of the boom to the bow to take the strain.

You could reasonably do this for under £100 if you are creative with materials but I'd probably try and buy one and just sell it on for 2/3rd the price when you're done with it.
