can anyone give an estimate on how much HP/torque the engine for a winch must have at minimum? if i could use a 70cc scooter engine/chassis and wheel that would be cheap ass hell, but that probably wont fly.. |

nah thats not gonna be enough, maybe 3-4 hp outa a scooter engine, form what ive heard 6.5 is the least if using a torque convertor, and 8 if running a straight to cetrifigul clutch |

okay, thanks i'll be looking for an engine that gives out about that amount! i have a 150 HP Honda fireblade engine lying in the shed, probably not a good idea (and heavy as hell haha)! |

I'm about 215lbs so I decided to go with an 8hp engine on mine with a torque converter. It can deep-water start me pretty easily on a wakeskate (and really easy on a wakeboard, skates have a smaller surface area, hence, harder to get on plane).
You can definitely get away with a 6.5 horse engine for deep water starts if you're in the 180lb or under range (you can be heavier if you're sliding off of a dock or land or something). I'd also recommend trying to score a torque converter. It makes starts way easier and is less stressful on the engine. One more thing, the magic number for gearing seems to be 6 to 1 (for example, if the sprocket on the engine is a 10 tooth, the one on the spool should be a 60 tooth). This is good for most of the setups i've seen and I'd recommend that ratio for a starting point. |

Rad, if it's in good condition, jump on it! 11hp might be difficult to move around but if you build a light frame/spool and slap some wheels on it, you'll be solid. |

6.5 hp and a 60 to 70 tooth sprocket will do the trick, harbor freight has them on sale all the time, I personally run an 11 hp which is overkill _________________ ☆PHOENIX WINCH☆

harbor feight is a discount tool supply store, not everything they sell is good quality so some people give them a bad rap for that, 6.5 hp is plenty esp if you can remove the governer, since you only run the engine less than a minute each time you won't damage the engine and you'll get higher rpm

Ok.. i think sending an engine overseas is going to be veeerry costly, so i'll keep looking here (netherlands).
i found an enginge for about 85dollars (cheap) but it has an axle that is conical... |

i went with a 13 hp clone motor, with electrical start and oilbath clutch. new, so it was pretty expensive. it's getting delivered monday or thursday. all i'm missing now is the sprockets and chain, the frame is almost done. |

yeah? we started last week.. the spool is completely done, had an axle made, bought some axlebearingholderthingamajigs, sprocketpickups etc.. ordering the sprockets and chain as we speak, welding the rest of the frame wednesday evening. then fitting the motor in and we could be done in the weekend haha! |

we didnt remove it just yet, we tuned the spring to make it shorter and we put it in the outer hole. now it revs significantly higher! |
