I'm screwed....if I got one at the lake, it would get the munchies so bad I'd be dead in seconds Laughing

My brother that rides with me is always watching that "Monsters inside me" show, and never fails to tell all about episodes that involve lake water. REAL NICE A-HOLE!!

Here's some more interesting information on it...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naegleria_fowleri#cite_note-20

Quote:

Timely diagnosis remains a very significant impediment to the successful treatment of infection, as most cases have only been discovered post-mortem. It killed 121 people in the U.S. from 1937 through 2007, including six in 2007 (three in Florida, two in Texas, and one in Arizona);[9] it killed one in 2008 (California),one in 2009 in Florida.[11], and two so far in 2010 - one in Minnesota and one in Texas .

Wakeboarder3780, northern riders aren't exempt...

Quote:

In August 2010, Minnesota state epidemiologists reported that a 7-year-old girl died of meningitis caused by the amoeba, after swimming in several different bodies of water in the state. This was the first-ever reported case in Minnesota and the first ever documented in a northern state.

Mr. Green

My boss brings this up all the time when I talk about the lake. One thing that is good to note is the number of cases is pretty low considering...

Quote:

Dr.’s Fowler and Cutler first described human disease caused by amebo-flagellate in Australia in 1965 [3]. Their work on amebo-flagellates was quite ground-breaking as it provided an example of how one protozoan can effectively live both freely in the environment, and in a human host. In the years since more than 144 cases have been confirmed in a variety of countries.

Yeah, I've heard about this. One of the cases happened in a lake not too far from me. It's one of those things that is so rare/something you can do nothing about so I just push it out of my head (brain? heh).

Scary shite though

I don't know if anyone's laughing at anyone that died from it. I think it's more of a "if you don't laugh it up, you'll be depressed situation".

It's just one of those things you have to let go. Think about fatal car crashes. More of those happen in a years time than these amoeba things. You still drive everywhere don't you?

You have to be able to have some sense of humor over your own mortality or you'd go insane.

yeah, it was at camp champions on Lake LBJ. My good, good friend is on staff there. the kid was like 12. That same summer a counselor drowned, and my friend found him. awful! I would quit after two deaths in a summer at a kids/teen summer camp...but he's still there.

edit* after looking into it it looks like the second guy in Texas also got it from LBJ, only 14 days after the first kid!! that's where i most often ride......

chawk610, Still, WARM water is what you have to watch out for. I tend to avoid winching anything other than salt water around August/September. I remember reading something about these things basically lying in the bottom of the lake kind of hibernating until the temps get really high.

So basically, once a lake gets warm throughout, these rise up off of the bottom and get stuck in people's brains.

I don't like to risk it even though it's a very slim chance, find some cooler water or skip riding that day.

yeah, LBJ get in the eighties easy during the summer. with all the things we have to worry about while participating in this sport, why do brain eating amoebas have to be one of them?

Yeah, LBJ is a very warm murky lake. I think that's why. Sometimes it's not even refreshing to get into.

I don't remember the exact temp, but if I recall correctly, the water needs to be somewhere in the mid-80's throughout to be a problem.

And that's why I was saying it's great to be in the north woods. Our water never gets that warm. It's still a crazy thing to think about though. Since the water clarity is so crappy on our water system every once in a while I also let my mind wander to what might be below me and how big it could possibly be. Then I get up and shred Smile

Think of it this way. If you actually died from your passion - that's a dang good way to go if you ask me.
