|
|
I have become able to do my H/S w2w these days.
But when I check my w2w by VIDEO, I notice that my knees are bent
when I am at the top of the wake. As a result, my jump is LOW. I have never made my w2w with my knees straight like those who make a big pop.
I know that I am absorbing the pop with my knees.
But what makes me mixed up are the tips that say “”Edge hardest when you are at the top of the wake”” and “”Stand tall at the top of the wake””.
When I see the video of those who make a big jump, I can see that they are edging progressively. (the water spray coming out from under the board is really large.)
But when they come close to the wake they start to stand tall. At the same time the spray becomes small.
Doesn’t this mean that they are coming off of edging?
Are they really at their strongest edging when they are taking off?
When I try to edge hard as possible at the wake I’m not standing vertically but leaning back a little and my knees are still bent at the top of the wake.
When I try to stand straight at the top of the wake, I think I am coming off edge and flatten out.
Somebody please tell me how to ””Stand tall”” & “Edge hard” together.
ANOTHER QUESTION
Checking VIDEOs of those who make a great jump I notice that when they are Approaching the wake , the board is in front of their body but when they start to stand tall ,the board comes right under their body.
Does this mean that they are pulling their body up to the board or is the board automatically coming back by their strong edging? |

Yeah, it's tough to get the feel of at first. The idea is to stand tall while still on edge. Some videos may look different, because 1) they may need a different edge for the move they are doing and 2) pros get away with not always following the rules because they are so familiar with the board and wake that they can kind of cheat a little.
Think of it like this, you want to stand tall like you would if you were sitting on the ground, and had a rope to hold onto in front of you for your leverage to stand up. You don't stand straight up, but you can't lean back too much either. You want to push upward so that most of the pressure is still on your heels (on a hs wake jump).
A good way to practice is to cut out only 4 or 5 feet from the wake and really focus on edging and standing tall. If you do it right, you can actually pop nice and high and go wake to wake at that distance.
So just try it out, but make sure you don't absorb the wake with your knees anymore. |

| push off the VERY TOP of the wake by standing tall, its a timing thing, do it too late and your knees will absorb the pop, do it too early and you will get pulled forward by the line. |

This is the BEST advice you can do... You won't go as fast, but it'll force you to edge as hard as possible abnd to stand super tall, or you won't go far at all... And since you won't go as fast, it won,t be as scary... Thats exactly what permitted me to land my TS w2w jumps... Just cut out really really close to the wake, abnd as confidence increase, just augment the distance between you and the wake... That should do it! _________________ Now even tough I know there's NO one in here that lives anywhere near Montréal, if you ever feel like riding, just pm/e-mail/msn/whatever else me |

what helped me to go high is to be sure to have the handle in tight during the pop and the flight
but I don't know either, sometimes you're getting poped up very easy and with no effort and sometimes, you have to "work" as hard as hell to get a nice w2w jump...

Thanks for the tips. Well I will try the short approach jump this weekend.
But I think I need a tip for this too. I have once read that a short approach is a good training, so I tried it once.
But what happened was
1)I bent my knees to get the hard edge.
2)I had no time to stand tall
3)I took off the wake with my knees (my bud was almost touching the board)
4)Low air
5)My board pierced the 2nd wake
6)Disappeared
To start cutting back from 4 or 5 feet and stand tall at the wake , I think that there is no time to bend my knees or to lean back.
When you do this short approach jump,
1. Are you standing tall all through the cut out and in? (Knees never bent?)
2. How do you lead your cut in ?
3. Do you need to kick or push the wake to make a w2w jump with this short approach?
4. Any other advice for this short approach jump?
Any tips please.
Thank you for you all who gave me a tip.

Ah, that's one thing I forgot to mention. You should bend your knees just before you start edging in. It will feel weird at first, but if you do it right, you will be able to build a good edge when you come in.
All you need to do is stand tall at the wake, don't push off too quick. The speed of your push upward should be slow enough that if you were doing it on the ground, you wouldn't jump. Standing tall like that increases your edge, while bending your knees decreases your edge, which is why you want to bend them at the beginning of your edge.
While coming in, you never (except for trip flips like tantrums and ts frontrolls) want to decrease your edge on the way in.
Also, make sure you look at the wake through your whole edge in. This sounds dumb, but if you think about it, you may notice that you usually don't look where you're going. A lot of people look at the boat or in front of them, then look at the wake right before they hit it. |
