First post in a long time but I finally accepted my addiction to the best thing in the world, shreddin. This is the first summer I am taken away from love because I am working at a golf course. Don't get me wrong, I think starting work at 5:30am and cutting grass is a surreal job, and the perk of free golf at a 75k+ membership course is great, but I suffer on these perfect hot and calm days.
My family and I have a lakefront place at Christina Lake, BC, where I usually spent my entire summer there. I miss waking up early to the sunrise, and perfect water. Riding a few hours then munching good breakfast. Laying on the beach all day then ride again at night. Followed by beer on the deck.
So now to my main struggle, I feel as if I am wasting my summer away working, when I could be out doing what I love. I am still quite young, and soon enough life will change and leave me little oppertunity. I have been so close to quitting and getting in my car and heading to my place. So for those who are spending their days labouring instead of riding, how do you get over it? Would you give up pay for what you love to do?

if i was single, didnt have a fam, and was younger and the boat had an endless supply of gas, i would ditch work in half a heart beat to board. i wouldnt think twice about it. but i have a bunch of obligations to take care of now, so boarding is next in line.

Money isn't as big of a deal as career path. If you're giving up a job that will set you up for the future that would mean a lot more than just your current pay.
If it's just a summer job like mowing lawns and you can get by with less pay, I'd do it for sure. You're going to blow all that money anyway so just total up your summer enjoyment and decide which ranks highest.

I feel ya for sure. Like Wakebrad said, however, it really depends on what kind of job it is. For me I'm working full time in a design engineering department that will count directly as professional experience. Next summer, though, I won't have school or career-related work so I'm thinking about moving to a city with a cable park and riding every single day and just working at a theatre or something to get by. It's a lifestyle we all want but just cant afford sometimes [/b]

Listen to this man.
I worked almost every summer since I was 14, gave up a lot of time with friends and wakeboarding. While the money was nice at the time, I blew most of it on useless junk (AWESOME if you're 14 though). Now I'm a little older and I've got a real job. I 100% regret missing all of the fun I could have had. Live it up, you only get this freedom for a limited amount of time. By the time you get freedom like that again, you'll be sitting in a chair with someone changing your diapers.

I did this too. Missed out on sitting on my ass or spending countless days at the lake on someone else's dollar. Make that last as long as you can, cause it ain't coming back once it is gone.

You can have both. Be smart and work it back to front instead of front to back.
What do you want when it's all said and done? Wakeboarding. Lots of it.
What does it take? House on a lake - Money. Lots of it.
How can you get lots of money? Good paying career.
How do you get good paying career? Get a degree that *directly relates* to that career.
How do you get a good degree? Go to a college that's has a good program for said degree.
Work those in reverse order and you'll be set. I've been extremely fortunate, but I've had a boat ever since my first year out of college and have been riding at least 2-3 times a week.
Get a good paying career in a city that has lakes within commuting distance and make the dream happen. Think long term not short term.
