OK so i have my 4 tower speakers and a new 10" sub all connected to a sony 600 watt 4-channel amp

ok yeah i realize that it would be ideal to have a dedicated mono amp for the sub but i dont really have room or the money for it.

my question is this, my amp is connected to my head unit by the speaker inputs that are wired to the rear speaker wires, the purple and green ones..

the amp is also connected via rca cables plugged into the "Sub" outputs on the back of the head unit.

I had this head unit in my old truck, it had individual sub control so i could send high frequencies through my door speakers and low frequencies straight to the sub, and the sub control on the head unit worked.

after hooking it up today, i dont have sub control by my head unit, my sub isnt acting like a speaker or anything, its just sending out low frequencies, but my tower speakers are also sending out low frequencies.

They dont thump or anything they sound fine, but i really just wanna make this whole thing work like i want it to and its just not happening.

i only want high frequencies to go through my tower speakers, and just low frequencies to go to my sub.

any ideas? heres a view of my amp, and my tower speakers are 6.5" alpine type-s

Do you not have a pre-amp out for normal speakers? It seems like you've got everything wired up correctly (except maybe bridging all of your tower speakers together).

It sounds like the issue is with your head unit. I had an old head unit where you had to navigate through some deep menus to enable subwoofer control. I think it was a JVC or something, and you had to actually turn the deck off and then hold the menu button for 3 or 4 seconds and it would allow to to set all the crossover frequencies and say if there was a subwoofer present or not.

I might be able to tell you more if I knew which HU model you were using.

Edit: On second thought I actually think the HU I was talking about was a pioneer, not a JVC.

Agreed with above
As for bridging all your tower speakers that should be fine and your getting a 2ohm load so your towers will receive more power.

Will you be out on the lake Saturday? If you don't have it figured out let me know maybe we can get together and figure it out.

Ok, first thing you should do is get rid of those speaker level inputs. Hook up the "front" RCA inputs to one of the RCA pre-amp outs on the back of your HU.

Next you have 2 choices. You have a HPF and a LPF on your amp, and you have another one on your HU. Personally I'd use the ones on your amp because you can set them and forget them and you don't have to worry about resetting them should you lose power in the HU.

On your amp I'm assuming those little knobs below the HPF and LPF are frequency cutoffs and not gain settings. If they are indeed frequency cutoffs you should set your HPF to around 75hz and your lowpass around that same value (you should check the sub's manual for best settings).

If that doesn't work you should RTM for your HU and figure out how to use the HPF and LPF on the deck.

This is from crutfield on my headunit

4 V Mono Subwoofer Preamp Outputs: In addition to the 4 V front and rear preamp outputs, this unit includes one set of 4 V mono subwoofer preamp outputs. Although there are two female RCA subwoofer outputs, the same signal is carried by both connections. A low-pass filter (see below) can be used to filter high frequencies from the signals output by the subwoofer outs.

High-pass Filter: The front and rear preamp outputs have a selectable high-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.

Low-pass Filter: The subwoofer preamp outputs have a selectable low-pass filter that may be set to 78Hz, 125Hz, or off.

when i turn on the low pass filter on the HU, my tower speakers sound like d1ck. when i adjust the sub dB's it does nothing.

taitrt, thanks for the advice, ill do that asap, that makes alot of sense!

so the signal for my "Front" speakers will be sent through the RCA's coming out the preamps on the back of my HU into the amp, and then up to the tower speakers?

what about my "Rear" speaker wires, the green and purple ones on the back of my head unit? just leave em unhooked? those are the ones wired to my amp at the moment

those knobs are gain not x-over point, i have the same amp. you gotta use the x-over in the deck. i run the front and sub rcas from the deck to the amp. sub is bridged. and 4 speakers off the high out on the amp in parallel that puts them at 2 ohm each side and not had a problem. not a bad amp for 20 buck at the pawn shop.

Sounds like you've got it hooked up to the wrong pre-amp out.

Here's the hook ups:

Subwoofer Preamp on Deck =====(RCA Cable)===== Rear input on Amp
Rear Preamp out on Deck =====(RCA Cable)===== Front input on Amp

Turn the LPF and HPF on the amp off.

Turn the LPF on the deck on for the subwoofer channel, set it to 78hz.
Turn the HPF on the deck on for the rear channel, set it to 78hz.

Do you have normal cabin area speakers in your boat, or just the tower speakers? If so, how many do you have and what channels (front/rear) are they wired to?

When i turn on or off the HPF or LPF i dont think it is specified for which channel, i think its for the whole output...

cabin speakers are hooked up to my front speakers right now, the white/grey wires

nevermind, when i do HPF it adjusts the front/rear inputs, when i do LPF it adjusts the sub.

I hooked it up today, w/ the RCA's instead of the wire connection to amp, it works amazing.... Tower speakers are nothing but high frequencies, sub is nothing but low, it sounds awesome. Thanks for the help guys
