So last week i was up in michigan on vacation and i was out on the lake with my buddy and he got a call from this girl and he asked if she wanted to come out and go wakeboarding with us. She came out, and of course she had never wakeboarded before...
So we get out there and i hop in first to show her what to do and stuff, hit a few w2w's, then her turn comes...
Surprisingly she got up first try, and makes it about 3/4 the way around the lake and she starts to get confident and decides to try and jump the wake.
She lands for roughly a second or so when she catches her front edge and slams face first, the board comes off and hits her in the back of the head. She gets in the boat and were driving back and she touches her and and theres blood,,,oh man, so we race in, grab my aunt who happened to be a nurse and she said she needs stitches, and the girl starts flipping out and stuff.
She ends up with 3 staples in her head right behind her ear and the most shes worried about is her hair appointment the next day...haha

Just thought id share that experience and just curious about any other crazy wakeboard experience any of you other guys may have had.

Peace.

We had the same thing happen to a friend of our except her cut was more on the top of her head. We also had another friend that was just learning that took several diggers and ended up having a concussion issue toward the end of the day. She didn't really know where she was or what was going on when we first got her in the boat. Pretty scary stuff.

well i'm glad she was more worried about the hair appointment!

just goes to show that you really should be comfortable, not just confident, before you start attempting tricks or jumps you haven't done before.

Almost identical story with a girl 7 years ago. Second date I take her wakeboarding, surface 180, faceplant, 4 staples to the head. Next time out she rode gain...keeper. Fast forward -> We have been married almost 6 yrs. Laughing

Well first off she was pretty daft to even attempt anything like that without knowing what she was doing. Also 'I hate to sound like mother...but' it's your responsibility everytime you take someone out for the first time to make them aware that they can't just go right ahead and try stuff, there's lots to be learnt.

Had two friends put their boards through their heads, one right in his forehead - he looked like Frankenstein for a while.

It's one thing to be able to jump, but it is a whole other thing to have good board control. I would agree with chocoholic on that point. Your friends might be able to go out there and do tricks, but are they stable and in control when they ride or are they really sketchy. If they look sketchy, it would be a good idea to help them understand they should work on some better control before going too far with tricks.

Chocoholic, Okie Boarder, Agreed. However, some people don't know their own limits and won't listen to reason. Case in point... on more then one occasion I've take a complete newb up to our local snow/ice ski hill. I tell them they have to learn to stop before they should go down the face, but they wouldn't listen. After the first forehead to snow plant resulting in skis and poles flying everywhere, they finally listened. Sometimes it takes pain to drive the point home that they shouldn't be trying something above their ability level.

I landed face first the first time I ever tried it when I was younger. Luckily the board missed my head and I only wound up with an aching back the next day.

Hahahaha I hear ya on that one! With newbies I normally explain to them that in general there is an order in which to learn things and they shouldn't even attempt certain things until they've got the basics down. Sadly (sorry lads) it's normally the ego maniac guys who refuse to listen, and yeah once they've hurt their knees and bashed themselves up a bit they finally realise that there is indeed a method to it.

I had a very very similar story about a month ago.

Friend of mine comes out riding for the first time, gets up his first try and was able to go in and out of both wakes no problem so I was pretty stoked because he was probably the best i've seen at a first attempt. He tried a very small toeside wake jump, not sure if he was even actually trying to jump or not but he got about 3 inches of air and fell forward, not even a vicious looking crash. We pull back around and he is holding his head, the board hit his head and he had to get 8 staples.

BUMMER!! He was a great sport about it.. but now I am one of the few people that actually wears a helmet behind boat, at least when trying new stuff, even if it doesn't seem cool.

I have also broke a helmet because the board hit my head at the cable park when trying an air trick. Sad

My friends don't seem to understand what you're trying to say choco. I can easily heelside w2w and toeside w2w happens here n there. I've been throwing grabs this whole season so far and now every expects to see me landing tantrums every time we go out. I said, i'm not getting a board to the face because they wanna se something beyond my skill level.

Right now I'm very focussed on learning to ride switch. I spent a whole session the other day riding switch. Just about ready for some 1 wake jumps I think:)

Anyways. I do tell people when they're coming out for the first time to be ready to face plant, it happens. I also tell them I intend to laugh at their misfortune, just as everyone laughed at me when I faceplanted beginnning of last year:P

The first time I tried a HS 180, I faceplanted (almost a side-face plant lol). I had a severe neck translation (that's what the doctor said it was) and my right hip was moved up so my left leg appears about 1/2 inch longer and I walk strange at times. My neck is now off to the left and it's quite obvious. I have to go to the chiropractor every week even this year. I guess I really messed my body up haha.

I'm sorry but WTF! How on earth did you manage that?! I hope you get sorted soon, otherwise we'll be using you to advocate the dangers of wakeboarding and how not to do things!
