I'm in a job now where most of my coworkers are riders. One of them arranged for a loaner bike for me. I've been riding it for about a week now (after adding my own pedals). I really enjoy it and it rides great. I don't know the owner personally but he was nice enough to let me use it while he's out of town. I think it's 4-5 years old and I'm considering making him an offer for it if he's looking to upgrade. I think it's a 62cm. I need some help for what the street value of this thing might be; I've looked at craigslist and ebay and haven't found much comparable. Help?

That's a trek 5200 (about 85% sure) with lots of upgrades... If you take some pictures of the shifters, derailleurs, and brakes I can give you a decent estimate.

That bike was around $2.5k-$3k new.

Edit: Yep it's a trek 5200 http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/BikeSpecs.aspx?ItemID=91956&Type=bike

Assuming that the guy is your friend (not expecting full price for the bike), I don't think $1500 would be an insult, though he might want a little more.

The bike was around $2800 new, the wheels (which judging by the braking surface are either Spinergy Stealth PBO or Stealth SS) are between $1000 and $1300 new.

I'd just ask the guy. Maybe he's got some different wheels he could throw on it and knock a little bit off the price.

Edit: I didn't read the initial post very well I guess. I thought this was an extra bike the guy had laying around that he let you borrow. I also thought you knew the guy pretty well.

I would say the "street value" on that bike is still around $2000 (+/- $200) in its current state. If you're just starting out you probably don't need a bike that nice, or that pricey.

i don't know about "lots" of upgrades, but those wheels are plenty of upgrade all on their own.

absolutely awesome bike.

Yeah, I couldn't tell by the pictures... but the rear brake looks like a dura-ace, and though I can't tell what the crankset is for sure doesn't look like an ultegra to me.

The shifters, brakes, and derailers are all ultegras. It sounds like this bike is worth a lot more money than I'm willing to spend on a first roadbike. I can get a new carbon trek with similar running gear (but OEM wheels) for around $1500. I bought the guy a $100 trek gift certificate for letting me borrow the bike...probably just leave it at that. thanks.

tball, don't limit yourself to trek. if it fits great and it's a good deal, make it happen. but i'll give you the same advice everyone gives everyone: go test ride a bunch of different bikes and shop around. find one that fits. hell, see if the shop will throw in a free fitting (usually $50ish) to get you completely dialed in.

full disclosure: i'm generally anti-trek because they're the 800lb gorilla, and got that way by buying up a bunch of smaller companies. of course, this is from someone who went so far outside the mainstream that he bought a....specialized...so take my opinion on trek w/ a grain of salt. no doubt they put out a great product.

still, just like a wakeboard, go out and try a bunch before you pick one out.

I also wouldn't get hung up on a carbon frame. I've riden a lot of bikes and I really can't tell the difference between a nice aluminum frame and a carbon one.

I ride a Cannondale R800 (a pretty inexpensive bike) and I think it performs very similarly to some significantly more expensive bikes. My brother in law rides a Giant TCR advanced, and I trade bikes with him every once and a while and he pretty much has buyers remorse every time we do (he paid around $3500 for it).

To me the most important parts of the bike are the shifters and derailleurs. There's nothing more annoying than having to fish for a gear change. I'd say as long as the bike you get has the shimano 105/ultegra groupset you'll be okay. Don't sacrifice groupset to get a higher quality frame. Shimano sora and tiagra are not worth it. Like JT said, just go out there and ride a bunch of bikes and see which one you like best.

Campagnolo guy myself. Other than that JT gives good advice, ride a couple different bikes to see what feels right. If you get into it you will invariably figure out that whatever you bought wasn't perfect based on the type of riding you do etc... but it will decrease the odds that you end up dissatisfied.

LOVE the name and look, wanted a FP5 VERY bad.... Much like Jt, I am not a huge fan of the 800lb gorilla with any product.... Loved the fact that I could ride one and could go forever without seeing someone with the same bike....or brand for that matter....

But....Laughing In the end....I ended up on the Madone 5.2....

Well I've been shopping. A lot. Came across a guy selling a lightly used 5.2 Madone frame (62cm) with forks, bars, post and seat for $600. I jumped on it. I picked up wheels, crank, and cassette so far for $125. I already own pedals, shoes, lights, and bag.

So I'm into it for $725 now. I'll be lurking some of the same sites you guys do for the other bits; hopefully riding in a couple of weeks.

Still learning so I'm not exactly sure. It's labelled Shimano Ultegra, with 175 stamped near the pedal hole on each crank. No other labels that I can see. It's a bit marred up by some chain rash but appears to be straight without any thread or gear teeth problems.

Just looking at the Shimano 105 Black series online. Sexy.

If looking at the whole groupset...

http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=A0554

With the tdf10 code, $523 shipped....

P.S. the 175 stamp is the size of the cranks....

Unmuthafunkinbelievable. I ordered this stuff Friday evening from jolly ol' England and it showed at my door today. Most impressive.

Gold Star for EJ. This 105 Black groupset is gorgeous and was 60% the cost of any other place. They even threw in assembly instructions (for the whole bike) and some shady triathlete nutrition pack (with some ingredients redacted - wtf?). Anyway, I'm a big fan now and am in a much bigger hurry to find tires. May even order them from probikekit.com as well.

jt09, check them out when you build. Thanks E.J.

EXCELLENT! Happy that you were able to swoop that up.... Looks great.

You're very welcome.....

I took the rest of the week off and because our weekend cabin/lake plans fell through, think I am going to get a lot of road bike miles in around Park City... Could be worse....

Done! I had a local bike shop do the assembly and I went with bright yellow bar tape to keep the bike from being entirely red and black. Stoked. Group ride this afternoon!!

BTW, the silver Ultegra crank and Bontager Racelite wheels in the earlier photos are available if anyone needs some cheap parts. Both in good shape.

Nice looking setup tball! JT, that trek is meaty! Looks like plenty of bike for a young one. I picked up a cross bike from bonktown. Got the Blue cx6.5 with the intention of using it as a commuter and come triathlon season, set it up for racing - it will be loads faster than my Specialized mtb I used lst year Rolling Eyes. A guy at the lbs was trying to sell me on a specialized tricross, but the thing was heavy and kind of clunky. Not a fan of the triple, nor the additional set of brake levers.

Anyway, bonktown has this bike as low as 900 bucks with sram apex groupset, I wanted to build but this was a no brainer. Got some cheap crank brothers pedals and a saddle bag for commuting.

For road setup I flipped the stem and got a set of michelan kromium slicks (nashbar, kind of ugly but whatever), fizik saddle (ebay, oem saddle was junk), time rxs pedals(bonktown), cateye double wireless, and shimano tr-71 tri shoes (bonktown).

Might get a fast forward seatpost and some clip on bars for triathlon, instead of getting carried away building up a tri bike. 2 bikes is enough for now.

Fresh out of the box - Had to take a link out of the chain, check out the derailleur. Yeah ugly couch is ugly, it's the dog's couch.

Set up for road, dog wondering wtf I'm doing

Shoes, couldn't pass this deal up, 125 bucks for carbon sole tri shoes

hey! i have a tricross and i love it! Laughing Laughing i'm curious as to why you'd buy a cylcocross bike to race tris though - completely different geometry and purpose, no?

not a fan of the triple what?

i <3 the additional levers - they are greatness in town.

HAHA, I was thinking I remember you saying the tricross was on your radar. Nothing wrong with it, I just didn't like the specs for the price and it was a tad heavy. I was looking at 1K for a tricross sport wich tiagra and sora components. When I rode the tricross I though to myself how it seemed bombproof, but it felt mountain-bikey.

The triple chainring. I like having a compact double rather than a triple up front.

I didn't buy it just for tri, I bought it for versatility. I wanted a faster commuter than my heavy mountain bike. It will normally be set up with the crank bros pedals and cross tires. If I want to go on a group road ride, throw on the slicks and swap out the pedals. The lbs guy actually turned me on to a cross bike because I can change it around to whatever I'm using it for. The geometry is different but that can be changed. If I decided to throw clip on aero bars on it, I could get a forward-set seatpost to change the geometry to sit me farther forward over the frame.

mine only has a double. i picked up the expert off of ebay for $1500 delivered, which was a steal - it retailed for $2200 at the lbs, before taxes. i need to get rid of this damn bronchitis so i can get back out and ride.

Man, awesome find! SRAM rival? Specialized site has it listed for $2900. I'd certainly be more interested in the higher end tricross, but I wasn't willing to pay for it. 1500 sounds saweet though.

I need this weather to clear so i can get out on the pavement. Been doing spin class on non-lifting days to prepare my ass and legs for some slow twitch action. It's a balmy 8 here today and I'm halfways thinking about putting on the winter gear and getting out there.
