I have been on a huge Bob Seger kick lately. IMO he is one of the most underrated artists in history. I'm a bit biased because I'm a Michigan guy, so a lot of the songs hit home for me, but it seems that Seger doesn't get the respect he deserves as one of the greats.
A lot of people are familiar with his more popular stuff, but I literally have every album he's put out and most of his stuff that wasn't main stream is great. And his progression throughout his career provides a wide array of styles of music to choose from. From Ramblin Gamblin Man, to Travelin Man, to Roll me Away, to Wait for Me off his latest album he put out a few years back. Just a timeless artist...
So this begs the question who do you think is an underrated artist? Doesn't matter what genre, era, etc. I'm just curious to hear some other responses...
I guess he's underrated in the sense that I think he's one of the top 5 artists of the last 50 years, but for most he's an afterthought, mentioned, but not given the proper respect that is due...
Perhaps I should retitle the thread to something else....
You will love them...I heard there producer screwed them over. I have been to three shows and they are seriously one of the best bands I have heard. I would put them up there with Pearl Jam...serious as a heart attack!

Everybody's entitled to an opinion but top 5? seriously? that is putting out a lot of people. Hendrix, Lennon, McCartney, Clapton, James Brown, BB King this list could go on and on representing people who have influenced music more than Bob Seeger. Don't get me wrong, I like his music but apprently don't see him in the same light you do. _________________

Few others I can think of but these guys at least in the American suburban Norman Rockwell world I grew up in got left behind for some reason and IMO were tha c h i t.
IMO punk in general was underrated and was a huge influence on all types of music being put out these dayz. _________________ PEACE

Zen Arcade is an amazing album. I have it on wax.
Especially when you consider the time when it was released. Very ahead of everything even til this day.
Since this band will not be in the mainstream, most people will not agree or even know them.
But the band The Exploited has been playing punk music at a very high level for a very long time. When you look at the life cycle of punk bands, they are usually very short. Watti has been killing it for decades.
Look what happen in Montreal when they canceled a concert.
D$, Girlie and her Brother grew up with a few members of Dredg. Her bro actually kicks it with those guys a ton. Damn good band. Good call.
I will have to say Fugazi is at the top of my list. Saw them several times over the years. Always sounded better than their albums when live. Best show, I saw them at the Filmore in SF with Jawbreaker as the opener. Effing amazing show! Jawbreaker killed it too.
I think I am going to dig out my old Fugazi albums today now actually. Good thread!
eich82, Agree 100% on Seger. Don't consider him underrated though. Always loved his stuff. Influence: Turn the Page..... Metallica....
Chevy.. Like a rock...
Joe Dirt....

Thanks for the heads up, that song is amazing!! I wouldn't say they are anything like pearl jam. More like an Incubus meets Muse meets U2 style. Just bought their album of itunes, will listen to it on the drive home from Lake Wales today. _________________ Liquid Force

I feel like Dispatch should have had a more national following. They had a huge underground following but if you asked the average person about them, they would have no idea who you are talking about. I don't think I've heard a Dispatch song I didn't IMMEDIATELY like. State Radio is the lead singers new band except Dispatch was essentially two lead singers with Chad and Braddigan. Now it's just Chad who was the main writer so it still has a lot of the same sounds but just isn't the same.
Their final show in Boston was at the Hatch Shell and it was a free farewell concert. Over 100,000 showed up marking the largest audience ever for an indie rock band. They had 3 more concerts at Madison Square Garden for their Zimbabwe charity that all sold out within 15 minutes of going on sale. Not many bands that would be considered current (ie not the rolling stones) could get 100,000 people to a show and not many bands could sell out the Garden 3 nights in a row in under 15 minutes. _________________ Liquid Force

I've been a Bob Mould fan for a long time, especially his stuff with Sugar. However, after finding out that he bats for the other team I have a hard time listening to some of his stuff knowing that the lyrics are written about some dude he's banging. _________________ "I'm not a professional wakeboarder, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night".
Since we are kinda on the early Punk topic, I think Dead Kennedys need an honorable mention here as well. And since I had already mentioned Fugazi, we can't leave out Ian's first band Minor Threat.
Word
2 that I can think of off the top of my head are Clutch and Sublime. I know both have had some big hits, but sadly the stuff that made it to the radio are some of their worst tunes. My summer play list is heavy with Sublime, nothing better to chill on the boat to. Clutch is a crazy show live, and great for pumping up before a ride.
ky1e, which album did you bye? "Catch without arms" is my favorite, but there latest one "The pariah, The Parrot, the Delusion" is pretty damn good too. So what do you think?
K-dub, dude...that is freaking sweet. They are so freaking good live, guy has an amazing voice. _________________
Dredg! They were awesome live when I saw them a few years back w/ Pinback and a few others at some festival. I've always wondered why they never really blew up. Great sound IMO. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

I will have to third KDubs Fugazi when I saw them they played for three hours and it was the most sonic experience of my life. No one to this day has touched that show and I have seen a ton.
I would have to say imo Mike Watt and or Minutemen have never gotton their just dues the basslines he layed down were pushing boundries.
I had the luck of catching Husker in support of Candy Apple and unfortunatley they were on the downside with all the inner band termoil. But I did see Bob like three times solo and Sugar like four or five times.
On the harder side I think Downset never got enough aclaim when they were around.
Thanks for the headsup on State Radio I wondered why they sounded so familiar.

Built to Spill, Sparklehorse, Beck, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Blonde Redhead, Broken Social Scene, Del that Funkee Homosapien, Explosions in the Sky, Feist, Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, Les Savy Fav, Murs, Pinback, Queens of the Stone Age, Spoon, TV On The Radio, Wale, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Just some awesome indie/underground stuff. It's all underrated because it's all better than the mainstream trash out there now. _________________ Keep Austin Weird

For me, Clutch is highly underrated. Raw and a style all their own. I call it "Swamp Metal", but it doesn't seem to be catching on. _________________ WakeSurf and Wakesurfing News
Not really well known but I think Andy Mckee is one of the greatest acoustic guitarists PERIOD. Check these out and see what I mean if you have never heard him play.
Karnivool, one of my favorite newer bands, the stuff they're doing is really progressive. They're an aussie band so maybe that's why they're not real known here. Similar feel to Dredg but a little harder.
Giving a nod to Pixies and Fugazi as well. Back in the 90s there was a pretty kick ass band called Kyuss, never really got huge though.
The reason I said that is because I don't think they get the respect that they deserved. Most people only know the few songs that get radio play and have no idea how musically diverse they are. _________________
