I am going to buy a new DSLR and am having trouble deciding between 3. I am considering a Nikon D3000, Canon Rebel XS and a Sony A330. Right now the Sony and the Canon are in the lead because they have live view and the Nikon does not. But the Nikon can ISO up to 3200 as will the Sony but the Conon won't go that high. So I guess I am leaning toward the Sony right now. Here are the specific packages I am looking at. Please provide me with any feedback you may have. Thanks

You said you're buying a NEW one, does this mean you already have one? If so have you purchased lenses for your current one, if so you'd want to say with the same brand so you can keep using your lenses.

I have a Canon T1i and love it, so my vote is for the XS. I'm not a fan of the Sony memory sticks since they only work in Sony stuff.

Just because they CAN go to 3200iso doesn't mean you will want to shoot that high.

Here is a brief comparison of the noise levels in the Nikon D3000, the Sony A230 and the Canon XS (1000D)
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3000/page13.asp

In my eyes, the Sony and Canon are cleanest, and the Sony stays cleaner in the higher ISOs.

Instead of picking out the numbers that look the best (iso's, megapixels, etc), I would suggest heading in to a store to see if you can hold each camera model in your hand. Each one is going to feel a bit different in your hands so I would put more weight into making sure you're comfortable with where the buttons are and what not. Might sound insignificant, but it can make a difference after a few hours of snapping shots of stuff at a boat show or a soccer game.

I have a Sony a700 and pops has an a550. Both of us love em. The Minolta mount lenses are not as plentiful, but the in-body stabilization works great. Prepare for assholes to tell you how bad your camera sucks, I have had 3 strangers tell me that already =D

browneye253, I previously had an Olympus E500 DSLR but I no longer have it so I am looking for a new one.

scott a, I did go to bestbuy and played with the Nikon and the Canon but they did not have the Sony in stock. I'm trying to find somewhere that has it in stock so I can see it in person.

I like the built in stabilization in the Sony because then I can get less expensive lenses that dont have the stabilization in them.

I have more choices now... I am now looking at the Canon T1 and Nikon D5000. If I get one of these I will have to get the body and lens only rather than getting an extra long range lens. These shoot HD video but I am not sure if I would use that feature. Does anyone here use the HD video feature on a DSLR?

A couple of weeks ago I almost bought the Canon T2i. I was looking for an DSLR that shot HD video and the T2i seemed to fit the bill. However, I changed my mind after finding out about a common flaw with DSLR cameras that shoot video.... each time the camera changes focus or you zoom in and out, you will hear the sound of the lens in your videos audio.

This may not be an issue if you're going to edit the video and lay music over the audio track, but since I will primarily be shooting my kids events (recitals, plays, parties, etc.) I really didn't want to hear the sound of the lens focusing in the audio. You can get around this by turning off the auto focus and going manual, but that was not what I was looking for.

Instead I opted to buy a really nice HD video camera now (Sony HDR CX500V) and keep using my Fuji still camera for the time being. Perhaps down the road I will invest in a nice DSLR, but I'll save some coin and get one without the video features.

Nauty, I really don't plan on using it for video anyway, i was just curious. I'd rather have a stand alone video camera thats smaller than a dslr camera and I would actually use it. I can't see myself using a dslr camera to shoot video too often.

Well I ended up getting a D5000w/18-55 and a 70-200 VR lens. Now I just have to learn how to use the thing. Laughing
