Well my friend had a bad day yesterday. Wife trailered the boat and left it running when he pulled it out of the water. Temp got up to about 220 before he realized it and turned it off. Put it back in the water and it would only turn over. Tried for 20 minutes and it wouldn't crank. Took it home and then back to the water about 30 minutes after incident. Boat cranked right up but wouldn't run long. Went by his house an hour later and the engine was still pretty warm. I told him the impeller was probably shot at a minimum and that the boat would probably be fine after it cooled back down. He is trying it again this morning but haven't heard from him. It's a newer boat. His wife thinks she ruined it. Oil is still new looking and it's not leaking anything. Motor doesn't smell like it's burned up. Anyone else goofed up like this and lived through it? |

I'm betting it is not blown. A lot of the newer engines have a protection mode that will shut down when the temp gets that high so that it doesn't happen. Probably hadn't cooled enough in 30 minutes to take it out of that mode so that might be why it still didn't run great.
Might have him check the spark plugs and the electrical components for damage, melted wires, etc. I would think that those would be the reason it wasn't running right. And you're right-impeller is most definitely toasted. _________________

pet575 is probably right. The impeller is trashed and even if it still looks ok I'd change it. Also if it is torn up make sure that you get the pieces out of the water passages or they will clog and cause overheating issues in the future. There could be more damage, warped heads, burned exhaust manifolds and hoses, but it's really doubtful that the motor is blown. |

Yep, +1 to that. Should've mentioned the possibility of blown head gasket as well with that kind of heat. Regardless, more than likely not a blown engine though. _________________

yeah he was thinking it was possible it had blown a head gasket but after he cranked it a few times in the water and it idled a little bit there was no sign of oil in the water to verify a blown head gasket, i'm with you guys that i'm sure the impeller is trashed but i don't think much if any damage was done, he cranked it for a second to show me once he got it home last night and no blue smoke came from the exhaust so i doubt it burned the rings are anything up in it, i'll let him know others think the same so he can quit worrying so much and she can stop being sick to her stomach, she was literally calling the dinosaurs last night it bothered her so bad _________________ Lithic, LLC, my biz

I had an impellar go out on a 2002 xstar one time. It got so hot it melted the removable side panels to the manifolds. I let it cool down. Changed the oil two times, changed the impeller, cleaned everything up, and it was absolutely fine. However, that was back when the 205v's came with the 330ltr, which had both cast iron heads and a cast iron block. Everything heated up and cooled down at the same rate so nothing warped and I didn't blow a head gasket. It got way over 220 degrees too. |

220 degrees??? Am I the only one that thinks that thats nothing???
As said... change the impeller... But that is not enough heat to do any real damage to the hardware. _________________ When life hands you a Jeffrey just rub the furry walls... |

mechanic told him not to worry about it, mechanic is going to replace the impeller and reset the computer tomorrow so he can have it in plenty of time for this weekend, think he dodged a bullet, told him neither of us were ever going out on the water without someone else who knows what is going on to help with the boat duties _________________ Lithic, LLC, my biz

As said... change the impeller... But that is not enough heat to do any real damage to the hardware. | Most engines run at 190ish anyways, 220 is getting up there but not into temperatures that would start blowing things up. My motor bike hit temps of 210(while moving slow in town, a good gank on the throttle would drop it down to 199 which was average running temp). in the summer and that thing was hitting 15000 rpms at those temps. I wouldn't read too much into it.
Though I have to say the WORST thing he could have done was drop it right back in the lake after running it dry into high temps. If anything was gonna crack the block or warp it would have been due to that...THink about what happens to a frying pan when you put it under cold water after cooking... |
