I can't wait. And for those that compared F1 to the othe Open Wheel events; there is not comparison. F1 is by far the greatest motor sport in the world!

That track looks pretty good for being a Tilke design. Looking forward to it.

I'm just giving Tex a hard time. Laughing

Seriously, why don't one of these venues just build an off-the-wall, one of a kind track. The TX track seems, well, generic. Right now I don't have time to search each track, but it looks much like a spinoff of one I've seen before. I'll look later.

somewhat, but the directions are opposite, austin has an added double hairpin and after watching the lap video for istanbul, it doesn't appear to have the drastic elevation change austin will.

either way, generic is not an accurate description.

excellent transportation infrastructure

the traffic situation here is the single biggest political and business issue facing austin and central texas. austin just lost a huge expansion deal that would have added 600 permanent jobs (on top of all the construction/contracting to build the new facility) because the employees would have had to relocate/commute from sw austin to north austin (i'm guessing the company was amd, but that's just my guess). our transportation infrastructure is anything but excellent.

i'm assuming that because they are planning it out west of town that they are referring to the new 130 toll road. still it costs an arm and a leg to take it and that's only n/s. e/w is still served by 71, and that's going to be a freaking nightmare.

this is going to piss me off royally because i drive to houston almost every week. on 71, which is going to have to be widened to accommodate. that means a year or two of construction, killing my tidy 2.5 hour commute. Evil or Very Mad

we'll see. i'm still skeptical that they have it finished on time. we're one year from the beginning of this thread and they have a year to go. here's where they are now:

there's also a bunch of morons trying to kill the $25million promised to the race because of the budget issues. f*ing idiots - especially the lead dog, who took every last red cent he could from the special use fund to finance the support needed for the houston super bowl and nba all-star game.

I'm really surprised this is going in North of Austin. I figured the hippies would have crushed this at the start. They have to be killing a salamander or something out there.

goofyboy, it's west of austin, out past the airport where the new toll road hits 71. there's nothing out there but (relatively) flat land.

your compass must be backward... the airport is east. I know the area. I guess it is far enough away the hippies don't care. That's a good thing. They always pissed me off when i lived in austin.

goofy, I will take you up on that offer. But, I don't think you are going to have any fun. All it means is that you get to drive an F-350 Dually with a Porsche on a trailer. Laughing

man, this is all crumbling like a house of cards.

Quote:
Developers halt construction at Circuit of the Americas

Construction on Circuit of the Americas, a $300 million Formula One race track in southeastern Travis County, has been shut down indefinitely until a contract dispute between the race promoter and circuit officials is resolved, officials said today.

Promoter Full Throttle Productions, headed by Tavo Hellmund, has a contract with Formula One to hold races for 10 years starting in November 2012, but those rights have not been transferred to the Circuit of the Americas, officials said in a statement.

“While construction at Circuit of The Americas has progressed as scheduled with over 300 workers at the construction site daily, all work will suspend immediately,” the statement said. “The delivery of the Formula One Grand Prix race contract will allow construction operations to resume.”

A timetable to transfer the rights has not been met, officials said today. They did not elaborate on other details, including how long the dispute has been going on, how long it might last or whether circuit officials are willing to walk away from the project.

“It is in the best interest of all parties to reach a timely resolution. Local businesses, fans and the State of Texas are counting on us,” Red McCombs, a founding partner of the circuit, said in the statement.
The track, which is under construction in southeastern Travis County, has been scheduled to host the inaugural U.S. Grand Prix on Nov. 18 next year. A MotoGP race, motorcycling’s equivalent of Formula One, has been slated for 2013 along with Australian V8 Supercars. It is not known how plans for those series would be affected by the construction stoppage.
The schedule to have the circuit finished by November of next year has not been affected, officials said.

The American-Statesman first reported the possibility of a split between Hellmund and investors in the track, including McCombs and local businessman Bobby Epstein, in September.

That month, Hellmund called state Comptroller Susan Combs asking whether a change in management or promoters would affect the circuit’s eligibility for money from the state Major Events Trust Fund. Combs responded that the race would still be eligible for the incentives in a letter to Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone.

Combs’ letter also revealed that major investors in the track haven’t secured the rights to hold the race.

Ecclestone elaborated on that split over the weekend.

“There are two parties. One is building a track, the other has the contract, and they’ve forgotten to talk to each other,” Ecclestone told Autosport.com.

In spite of the differences, the pace of construction at the track increased dramatically in recent weeks after grinding to almost a complete halt in late summer.

One person closely associated with the project said more than 300 workers were on the site last week. Monday a similar number seemed to be on hand as above-ground construction of the paddock building had begun.

it's not getting paved w/o that race. i'm highly doubtful that it ever happens, but i have a close friend who works closely w/ bobby epstein (on investment funds, not on this) who says it's all going to happen, and not to worry. i trust him on a lot of things, but he may just be sticking up for his boy when his boy doesn't have the juice to really make it happen.
