I know there are a billion tantrum threads on here but I've never really seen this discussed, i'm sure it has and I just missed it.
I've got "The Book" DVD, looked at countless videos, and I can't seem to see or figure out the whole switching edges at the wake thing.
I've read some people don't actually switch some do.
I mean I get what it means from heel side to toe side but watching video it just doesn't seem very apparent. It just looks like they take a nice slow cut at the wake drop the trailing hand shoulders square to the wake and pop...I don't know.

| some people really trip it hard, and others just flatten out in the hole. try both and see which one is easiest for you. its just personal preference |

I don't really get the whole switching edges thing though...I mean do you rotate to toe side and slide your rear leg so then the board is parallel with the wake? Or just come off edge and slide your rear leg? Watching vids it only seems like they come off edge and square up their shoulders...
So easiest for me would be coming off edge I guess... |

| you shouldnt do any sliding, just squaring up your shoulders and board. and to square up your board you have to come off your edge. |

| when i do my tantrums i just take a hard cut towards the wake and when i reach the bottom of it i let off and let go with my back hand flatten out and make myself like perfectly in line with the boat (the way the boat is traveling) and then just look straight back... i think it is hard to explain and hard for you to understand because it all happens so fast... its more like one motion of all of it put together and not really a step by step. |

Do you have to take the handle over your head, or is that just to help take you straight back? I ask because it looks like a back layout on a trampoline and I keep my arms (or at least my elbows) to my sides when I do those. _________________

| tcaseymcclure, and to add to this, make sure you are letting the wake kick you up, I used to have trouble waiting to get pop and to initiate the trick. |

Christobull, actually, handle over the head isn't good. If you keep the handle toward your center of gravity it will help you rotate around. If you hold the handle high it will stop your rotation, which is helpful if you feel like you're over-rotating one. But if you're always throwing them like this you're probably just hucking them over the wake instead of popping them high. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

Ok, so I tried a couple of approaches and none of them reallly felt good or correct the last one I just kinda waited for the wake, felt pretty squared up, well as soon as that happened my board went up and out from behind me and i faceplanted in the water...it was awesome...for the people in the boat. So I'm guessing that I'm still doing something wrong because I feel that if I backplanted I would have had the "tripping" action going on.
I can do a both layouts and tucks on a tramp and I can do a Full off the back of a boat just jumping off the transom. So I'm comfortable with these.

ryan351w, when I cut in hard to the wake, I wait for the white foamy water and then I just switch to a nuetral edge on the balls of my feet ( as if you were just riding in the middle of the wakes) Just switching edges will square you up with the wake and then you feel the 'trip' fling you back and you just rotate then spot your landing. _________________ Grow some. |

Hey Ryan, I had the same question or problem when I started these. I was really tripping the board almost exagerating it with a big change in edge but after watching countless videos of the pros doing it I noticed they were actually riding the board more up the wake and taking the trick UP and just letting their momentum carry them accros the wake. this started making it much easier because I know have a lot more time for the rotation plus the people in the boat think it looks a whole lot cooler. _________________ If the good lord didn't think you could handle it, he wouldn't have put you in that bad of a position... |

| I think the 'switch edge' thing is confusing. When I do tantrums, it does not feel at all like I'm switching edge, even though I guess I am. Like some said before, the trick is to edge hard and quick (faster than w2w) and as you approach the wake, release that tension and slightly turn your back to the wake and get ready to do a standard layout/backflip like on trampoline. If you hold on to the rope, then you spin like twice as fast. You should try them at low speed first maybe (like 17-18 mph). Seriously, the tripping motion should be quite natural and easy, everyone I thought this trick got it in a day, then it's about taking it big which is another subject. Have Fun. Good Luck ! |
